A 72-year-old French adventurer successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a barrel capsule and arrived in the Caribbean island of Martinique.

Jean-Jacques Savin began his journey in late December last year from the island of Elheiro in the Spanish Canary Islands.

And relied on ocean currents alone to push the capsule across the Atlantic.

Safin announced the success of his trip on April 27, when he entered the Caribbean after spending 122 days at sea.

The flight covered more than 4,500 km.

Safin said in a publication on the social networking site Facebook that a Dutch oil tanker initially retrieved it with a barrel in the waters of the Caribbean Sea and brought it to the small island of St. Ostatius.

A few days later, a French boat brought him to the French outer section of the island of Martinique.

"It was a joyous journey but it was also dangerous," Safin said after arriving in the island of Martinique.

Safin, the former military paratrooper, spent more than four months in the barrel, which is 3 meters long and 2.10 meters wide.

The barrel contains a sleeping bed, a kitchen and a store. It has a hole in the ground that enables Safin to see the fish passing by.

The capsule was built to be resistant to waves and possible attacks by deadly Orca whales. A solar panel was also used to generate power for communications and positioning.

In his diet, Safin relied mainly on some dried foods, as well as the fresh fish he had caught, as well as the supplies that the ships had provided during his journey.

He has largely relied on funding for his trip on po[CENSORED]r donations.

When Safin launched his journey in December, he joked that he "wished" to end up on a French island like Martinique or Guadalupe.

During the voyage, the seven-year-old adventurer wrote a work on the experiment, which he plans to publish later this year.
