eriving from the ancient Greek words ‘kallos’, which means ‘beauty’, and ‘sthenos’ – meaning strength – calisthenics is, simply put, working out using your own bodyweight. Think push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups and dips – with nary a treadmill or set of dumbbells in sight.

Calisthenics (cali, to its advocates) is a pure form of exercise, but it has a darker side. Cali is also known as the 'prison workout' because it requires little space and no equipment – perfect for convicts confined to their cells. Ex-con Paul Wade, who spent time confined in some of the harshest prisons in America, wrote a book called Convict Conditioning, in which he describes how you can use calisthenics (no weights, no machines,...
