Luis Enrique to miss Spain game 'for family reasons'

Luis Enrique will not take charge of Spain for their game against Malta on Tuesday due to "family reasons", the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed.

La Roja face Malta in a Euro 2020 qualifier in Ta' Qali three days after Spain began their group with a 2-1 home victory over Norway.

Robert Moreno, who is Luis Enrique's assistant and previously worked with the Spain boss at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona, will lead the team in the coach's absence.

A tweet from the RFEF account read: "We inform of the absence of our coach Luis Enrique Martinez in the match tonight for family reasons.

"We ask for discretion and respect for his privacy. The second coach, Robert Moreno, will tonight lead the team."

Robert Moreno will be in charge of Spain against Malta on Tuesday night, with manager Luis Enrique absent because of “family reasons”.

Spain battled to a hard-fought victory over Norway on Saturday, with an audacious penalty from Sergio Ramos earning La Furia Roja all three points in their opening qualifying match.

The victory sees Spain top Group F after the first round of fixtures, and they will look to strengthen their grip on first place with another three points against Malta, who managed to secure a 2-1 win over the Faroe Islands in their opener.

After their humiliating early exit in last summer's World Cup, Spain will be desperate to qualify for the European Championships in style, as they seek to reassert their global dominance and lift the trophy which they last won in 2012.
