The decision announced on Friday, March 15, 2019, raises the diplomatic and economic pressure faced by the president in dispute in Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, to resign after months of political, economic and social crisis in the nation.

The Inter-American Development Bank (BID) on Friday expelled the representative of the president in dispute in Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and voted in favor of his position in the multilateral lender an envoy of the president in charge, Juan Guaidó.

The decision raises the diplomatic and economic pressure Maduro faces to resign after months of social and political convulsions. The BID said in a statement that the appointment of Guaidó's representative, economist Ricardo Hausmann, took effect immediately after a vote by the board of governors of the 48-member lender.

Argentina had said this week that it supported the candidacy of Hausmann, a professor of economics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, who was Venezuela's planning minister and a member of the central bank's board of directors in the 1990s.
