The parliament of Venezuela, controlled by the opposition, approved this Tuesday by majority to declare the president Nicolás Maduro as usurper of the presidency in a debate that took less than two hours.

The Congress now considers "null all the alleged acts emanating from the Executive Power", after ignoring the second term of Maduro, according to the text of the agreement they ratified in the session. The deputies will work to hold free elections, adds the agreement read at the end of the public discussion.

In addition, on Tuesday it was learned that US President Donald Trump is considering considering Juan Guaidó, head of the Venezuelan Parliament that controls the opposition, as the legitimate president of that country after ignoring Maduro, the Spanish-language site reported. CNN news network citing sources.

According to documents to which he had access to the Reuters news agency, the opposition Venezuelan parliament is also preparing to ask dozens of countries to freeze bank accounts of the Maduro government.

The financial measure and the declaration of Maduro as usurper appear in two draft agreements that the deputies had planned to discuss this Tuesday, according to the official agenda.

The deputies want to approve rules for a political transition, according to the draft. But the efforts may be futile, because the Supreme Court of Justice has declared all the laws of Congress null and void since 2015, when it declared it in contempt.

The Assembly, in parallel, plans to request regulators and banks from almost fifty countries in the Americas, Europe and also in China, Turkey and the Arab Emirates, to take measures to freeze the Maduro government accounts, with the aim of protecting the assets of the country.

The measure could further hinder operations outside the government, which already faces US sanctions. In the official agenda on Tuesday, the Parliament also included a decree to grant "amnesty and constitutional guarantees to the military and civilians that contribute to the defense of the Constitution."
The strategy of the Congress is to offer these benefits to those who disobey Maduro, said deputies and another document that Reuters had access to.
