When the arrow-headed McLaren 600LT outpointed both the Ferrari 488 Pista and the Alpine A110 to be crowned by Autocar as Britain’s Best Driver’s Car (BBDC) 2018, it became the 28th car to be awarded that honour.
Apart from being the first time Woking’s favourite car manufacturer has picked up our highest accolade, it was also the first time since 2012 that the award has been delivered to somewhere other than Maranello or Stuttgart. In fact, this year’s running was only the 14th that a Ferrari or a Porsche has failed to win in the three-decade history of BBDC.

All you need to do today to put the year’s best handling car on your driveway is walk into a McLaren dealership. You would be well advised to move quickly, however, because the 600LT will apparently sell out very soon. One or two previous winners of BBDC are more expensive still, but the vast majority of cars that have prevailed in our annual handling challenge are significantly more affordable. In one particular case, it is actually possible to buy a former BBDC champion for less than the cost of a new smartphone:
