Today our life revolves around the mobile. We are so influenced by him that we even inadvertently distort the past. For example, many people believe that tablets were invented after smartphones. Which are basically mobile without phone calls. Nothing could be further from the truth. Tablets were invented two decades before smartphones. With the help of the YouTube LGR channel, we are going to take a look at the Samsung PenMaster, the first Samsung tablet, marketed in 1992. That's 18 years before the first iPad ...

Samsung has always been a company ahead of its time. It is in your DNA. Although that means hitting the wall of incomprehension, because neither the market nor the technology are prepared for it.

Samsung PenMaster, the first Samsung tablet, was put on sale in 1992, when neither the demand nor the software to support such hardware existed. It was a brick of 29 x 24 centimeters, with a thickness of 4.5 cm and a weight of 2.5 Kilograms. Basically, a compressed laptop. Nothing to do with the current tablets:

Samsung PenMaster was equipped with an Intel 80386 SL / 20 processor, 4 MB of RAM, monochrome touch screen, 60 MB hard drive, 2.4 Kbps modem, battery, stylus, and MS-DOS 5.0 operating system.

In addition, Samsung sold a series of extras for an additional price: 4 additional MB RAM, floppy disk reader, 80387SX coprocessor, external storage PCMCIA cards, fast charger, and larger battery.

The battery lasted about two hours. It also had printer and mouse connector, and even VGA output to connect to a monitor:

The pen, called PenPoint, was able to recognize the angle of pressure, and used a battery:

The first tablet of Samsung worked thanks to the operating system Windows for Pen Computing 1.0, a variant of Windows 3.1 that supported touch screens, and offered some extra tools, such as a text recognition software:

The pen was not very precise to use, since it had a lot of latency, and text recognition often failed.

Samsung PenMaster, Samsung's first tablet, sold very few units, focusing exclusively on the professional market and executives, due to its high price.

The version without extras cost $ 3,995 at the time, the equivalent of about 7,000 euros today. With all the extras reached $ 5,000, about 8,500 euros today.
