Judge Sergio Moro accepted on Thursday the invitation of President-elect Jair Bolsonaro to head a superministry of Justice and Public Security, the magistrate, symbol of the fight against corruption in Brazil, said in a statement.

"After a personal meeting at which policies for that portfolio were discussed, I accepted the honorable invitation," said Moro, after meeting for nearly two hours with the far-right Bolsonaro at the residence of the president-elect in Barra de Tijuca (western zone of Rio de Janeiro).

"The prospect of implementing a strong agenda against corruption and against organized crime, respecting the Constitution, the law and rights, have led me to make this decision," he added.

The Justice portfolio will absorb the recently created Public Security, and according to the press, the anti-corruption and money laundering agencies.

Moro's performance is identified with the advance of Operation Lava Jato, which since 2014 uncovered a vast scheme of bribes at state-owned Petrobras that involved top businessmen and leaders of almost all political parties.

His sentences led to jail figures such as the executive Marcelo Odebrecht and former leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who since April has served a 12-year sentence and a month in prison for passive corruption and money laundering.

Lula's defense on Wednesday called for the acquittal of the leftist leader in another case (related to the purchase of land by Odebrecht to build the Lula Institute in Sao Paulo), alleging that Moro's integration with the Bolsonaro government would prove that his client is a victim of "lawfare" (use of laws for the purpose of political persecution).

Moro is the fifth appointed minister of the future cabinet of Bolsonaro, elected on Sunday with 55 percent of the vote and who will take office on January 1, 2019.
