No matter how fast your processor is and no matter how much ram you carry, there comes a time when you realize that your computer just does not work as fast as it did when you bought it. Windows loads slower, the programs take longer to start and, in general, your computer is delayed as if it had just come out of a two-night drunkenness. If this seems like your situation, these 5 tips will help you get more speed from your PC.

Disk cleanup utility
You may not realize it, but just because you end up with a file does not mean that your computer does. In many cases, if your computer's hard drive were a garage, you would have unused junk files stacked 20 feet high and spilling onto the street. Everyone should use the Windows "Disk Cleanup Utility" to remove old, unused, and temporary files that clog your hard drive.

Click Start, point to All Programs (or Programs), Accessories, System Tools, and click Disk Cleanup. Scan your hard drive for files that you can remove and it may surprise you to see how much hard disk space (and speed) you can release with a few clicks.

Defrag
Imagine a properly maintained hard drive with space the size of Wal-Mart filled with file cabinets. Now imagine tearing each drawer of each filing cabinet, throwing the contents to the ground and trying to find a document: it's a fragmented hard drive. Sometimes, the lack of speed is because your computer is working too hard to find the files you need. You can solve this problem by "defragmenting" your hard drive.

Click Start, point to All Programs (or Programs), Accessories, System Tools and click Defragment Disk or. Choose the disk you want to defrag and wait for the program to run for several hours.

Uninstall the unused software
We all maintain software in our systems that we rarely use. That software can steal system resources.

Click Start, Control Panel and "Add Deleted Programs" to open a screen that allows you to delete old programs that you no longer use. Simply select and uninstall all the programs you know to make sure you do not need or want them.

Buy more RAM
Increasing your RAM, the memory of a computer, can dramatically increase speed when certain operations or programs are executed. RAM costs so little now that you must install the maximum amount of memory your system can handle.

Stop them at the start
This operation requires a little more technical knowledge than the other four, therefore, proceed with caution. Many programs are loaded into the system tray at the bottom right of your computer's desktop and consume system resources, even if you never use them.

Click Start, Run, type msconfig and press Enter. Click on the "Start" tab to see a list of programs that start automatically with Windows. Clear the check box next to programs that you know you do not want to load at startup.

But do not erase any boxes unless you are 100% sure of the purpose of a program. Once it is finished, click OK and it will prompt you to restart Windows.
