Huawei has presented at the IFA 2018 technology fair in Berlin the Kirin 980, its most powerful and intelligent processor to date. We tell you in detail all the features of the chip that will integrate the Huawei Mate 20 that we will see next October, as well as the Huawei P30 or the Honor Magic 2.

Huawei's new mobile processor can boast the world's first in many ways: it is the first 7-nanometer, with CPU based on Cortex-A76 ARM and GPU Mali-G76; the first with dual NPU, the first with LTE intelligent modem Cat.21 and the first that supports LPDDR4X RAM.

First 7-nanometer mobile chipset
The Huawei Kirin 980 is the first mobile chipset built with a manufacturing process of 7 nanometers, a significant jump of miniaturization compared to 10 nanometers of the previous generation, the Kirin 970. Thanks to the internal components of the processor are smaller , greater power and greater energy efficiency are achieved. Specifically, the new processor improves performance by 20% and energy efficiency by 40% compared to the previous generation.

First with CPU based on Cortex-A76
On the other hand, the Kirin 980 is also the first with a CPU based on Cortex-A76, a new ARM core architecture based on its DynamiQ technology, which offers precise power and speed management controls. It has an eight-core configuration: two high-performance Cortex-A76 at 2.6 GHz for demanding processes, two medium-duty Cortex-A76 at 1.92 GHz for everyday tasks, and four Cortex-A55 extreme efficiency cores at 1.8 GHz for light processes.

To take full advantage of this configuration, Huawei has developed a CPU subsystem with Flex-Scheduling technology that flexibly allocates the cores suitable for each type of process.

Another aspect in which the Huawei Kirin 980 is also the first is to equip the powerful graphics chip Mali-G76 GPU, which is 46% faster and 178% more efficient than Mali-G72, the GPU of its predecessor . In addition, it uses artificial intelligence to intelligently identify the game workloads and adjust the allocation of resources for optimal performance.

Dual NPU and complete ISP

As far as IA is concerned, the Kirin 980 is the first to have two NPUs to offer greater processing power and intelligence. Thanks to this equipment, it improves the capabilities of artificial intelligence, such as the recognition of objects, the processing of images in real time or the recognition of images (up to 4,600 per minute).

To optimize photographic performance, the integrated image processor increases 46% in data throughput, improves compatibility for multi-camera configurations and equips a new HDR color reproduction technology. In addition, the ISP also has an improved motion tracking feature to capture snapshots of fleeting moments with ease. In the video section, the Kirin 980 includes a feature that allows the camera to record videos with 33% less delay.
