Juppitèr Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 The authorities say they have never seen one like it. A huge iceberg has moved to a town in western Greenland, forcing the partial evacuation of its inhabitants. The iceberg rises above the houses of the village of Innaarsuit, of about 200 inhabitants. The authorities ordered the evacuation of the inhabitants who were located in the part closest to the sea to avoid being affected by the waves that may produce the movement of the iceberg. "We are afraid that a large piece of ice will fall into the water and generate large waves that can cause irreparable damage in the locality," Susanne Eliassen , one of the local leaders, told the Sermitsiag newspaper . The authorities reported that the ice mass has not moved in the last hours. However, the risk remains because the electric power generator and the fuel tanks are close to the coast. Some experts have warned that these huge pieces of ice will continue to appear more frequently due to climate change. And that can affect coastal locations. In June, scientists at New York University had released images of a large block of ice that broke off near the east coast of Greenland. Now you can receive notifications from BBC News World.
