128 dead and more than 122 injured in an attack on an election in Pakistan

At least 128 people have died and 122 have been wounded in a suicide bombing that took place today during an election rally in western Pakistan, less than two weeks after the general elections in the Asian country. The jihadist group Islamic State (IS) has assumed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

"The death toll has reached 128 and there are 122 injured," said Qaim Lashari, deputy commissioner of the Mastung district in Baluchistan province, where the attack occurred.

 

The explosion occurred when a suicide bomber blew up the bombs he was carrying during a rally by the politician of the Awami Nationalist Party (ANP) Siraj Raisani in a market 35 kilometers southwest of Quetta, the provincial capital, the spokesman said. Police of the Mastung district, Sana Ullah.

"The attacker was sitting between the people (who attended the event) and blew up the bombs he was carrying at the end of the event," Ullah said.

Raisani, candidate for the elections on the 25th, was wounded in the explosion and died in a hospital, his brother Lashkari said. The source recalled that a son of the politician also died in a terrorist attack in 2011.

It is the second attack of the day against an electoral act, after the bomb attack on a former minister who left four people dead and 19 wounded in the city of Bannu, in the northeastern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
