At least five people have died Thursday in a shootout at the headquarters of the US newspaper Capital Gazette in the town of Annapolis, capital of the state of Maryland, as confirmed by authorities.

The acting head of the Anne Arundel County Police, Bill Kramph, has added that "several people are injured in serious condition," according to USA Today.

Official sources quoted by the ABC television network have indicated that a suspect has been arrested at the scene, but for the moment there are more details about it.

The authorities have indicated that they consider the
moment that the suspect acted alone.

The journalist Phil Davis, who works for the newspaper and was in the building at the time of the shooting, has indicated that the place was "like a war zone." "An armed man fired through the glass door of the office and opened fire on multiple employees," he added.
