On May 31, Zinedine Zidane resigned after winning three consecutive Champions League titles, the absolute record in the history of the competition. Lopetegui is Spain's runner-up in 2016. Throughout his career he trained at Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid's second team and FC Porto. As a player, Lopetegui has evolved both for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, being a goalkeeper, and in 1990 he won the title of champion of Spain next to the blanco club. Before taking over the national team, Lopetegui also led the U19 and U21 selections.
