The last two large illegal migrant camps in Paris were being evacuated on Monday morning, five days after a similar operation was targeted by about a thousand people, AFP quoted sources quoted as saying, quoting Agerpres.

The operation began in calm to local time 06:30 (04:30 GMT) in the camp in the Saint-Martin Canal, north of Paris, where 550 people were surveyed over the past week, an AFP journalist said. Most migrants came from Afghanistan and lived in tents for several months.

Another evacuation operation took place Monday near Porte de la Chapelle, also in the north of the capital, where about 450 people were installed, local authorities said.

The Paris Prefecture has assured, in a press release, that the administrative situation of the evicted persons will be subject to "thorough and thorough" verification by the state services.

Monday's 36th operation in the French capital in the past three months takes place less than a week after the largest illegal camp in Paris, known as Millénaire, near the Porte de la Villette. About a thousand migrants were transported to reception facilities, mainly sports halls.

The unhealthy conditions and tensions in these camps have prompted several weeks of growing concern. In May, a migrant died drowning in the Saint-Martin Canal and a person was seriously injured after a violent altercation in the Millénaire camp.
