G.O.G Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Damascus and its environs are completely free of extremists for the first time in seven years, the Syrian Army said Monday. The military captured the last remaining stronghold of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) in the capital and its adjacent areas. A group monitoring the war indicated that about 1,600 people, including hundreds of IS fighters, left the area over the weekend, heading to the desert, after reaching an agreement with the government. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted that government forces were evacuating extremists from the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk.
