The fourth division Dynamo Berlin made life difficult for Schalke in the first round of the German Cup before the Bundesliga club finally won 2-0 on Monday.

The Dynamo, who won 10 successive East German titles between 1979 and 1988 amid accusations of party rigging and political pressure, had the backing of secret police chief Rich Mielke. But after the fall of communism his fate has gone from bad to worse.

In front of 14,000 at the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Berlin, the Dynamo did not shy away from Schalke, who sweated the fat drop before being rescued by two late goals from Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Leon Goretzka sent a perfect pass to the Ukrainian midfielder to open the scoring in the 78 minutes and Konoplyanka secured the result with his second goal in a counterattack in time of discount.

It was Schalke's first win under new coach Domeniko Tedesco, who made headlines last week by taking away the captain's side to Benedik Howedes in favor of goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann.

In other World Cup games on Monday, Nuremberg defeated second division rival MSV Duisburg 2-1 and third-division Paderborn beat St. Pauli 2-1.
Hertha Berlin was playing with third division Hansa Rostock later.
