Cape Town - South Africans are spotting vehicle test mules all over the country as automakers conduct hot-weather testing.

The most recent sighting is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Mpumalanga, spotted by Wheels24 reader Tessa Gallon.

She sent us spy images of the new luxury SUV.

Updated interior

It's clear to see from the new 4x4, Mercedes designers have not deviated much from the original 1979 design.

Autocar reports that the new car will retain its body on frame chassis with a live rear axle. An updated interior will feature the automaker's updated infotainment system.

More: New G650 Landaulet

At the moment, South Africans can purchase the G-wagon in two derivatives; G350d and the G63 AMG which uses the stalwart 5.5-litre V8 producing 420kW.

The next-generation G-wagon will adopt the 3.0-litre diesel from the current E-Class as it's more 'environmentally-friendly' and more powerful.

We'll likely see the new behemoth for the first time at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2017 and on sale in 2018.
