Cape Town - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists that Luke Shaw is still firmly a part of his long-term plans at Old Trafford.

The left-back's future at United has come under scrutiny this season, after playing a bit-part role since returning from a broken leg.

Despite returning to full fitness, Mourinho has opted for Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian in Shaw's position.

After omitting him for the FA Cup fifth-round tie at Blackburn on Sunday, it was the fourth consecutive game the 21-year-old has failed to feature for the Portuguese coach.

But Mourinho said: "He had a very ugly injury, really, really ugly. Not just from the physical point of view, but also by the mental impact.

"He knows what I like in a defender, he knows that I like stability, that I don't like mistakes, that for me it is to trust a player totally and he has to work to get it.

"And when he is on the pitch again he has to try to give me that step by step because he is still only a young player, sometimes people forget he is only a young player with a lot to learn but I like the player and I like the boy.

When asked if Shaw could leave the Red Devils at the end of the campaign, Mourinho replied: "No, he will be here [next season and beyond] for sure, that is out of the question."
