Audi plans to buy back as many as 25,000 Q7 SUVs equipped with the 3.0-liter diesel engine, German weekly Der Spiegel reports. The expected move is prompted by the automaker's inability to bring that version of the V6 TDI engine into compliance, the paper said, confirming rumors that the 3.0-liter diesels across the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche lineups will get different technical fixes depending on generation.

Diesel Q7s affected by the EPA's Notice of Violation include 2009 through 2016 model year vehicles; the VW Touareg TDI was offered with a similar engine, but Der Spiegel did not indicate why only the Q7 faces the prospect of buybacks. In all, versions of the 3.0-liter TDI engine that were named in the Notice of Violation were installed in Audi A6, A7, A8, A8L, Q5 and Q7 vehicles, in addition to the Porsche Cayenne Diesel and the VW Touareg.
