Woman in the shower

Spare a thought for our ancient ancestors.

In medieval times, bathing was seen as a form of sexual debauchery, rather than something you just do to avoid alienating yourself from the rest of society.

It's fair to say that's one hell of a stigma attached to something we see as routine .

Giving yourself a regular hose down is a relatively recent phenomenon, but one which perhaps ties in with our obsession with cleanliness.

For example, skipping a bath or shower is the sort of thing you probably only do under extreme circumstances.

But what's the worst that could happen if you skip the shower for, say, two days?

A bit of dirt never hurt anybody, right?
Wrong.

While nothing life-threatening will happen to you, you run the risk of being scratched from several Christmas card lists.

Firstly, we're the proud owners of roughly 1000 types of bacteria on your body, according to twentytwowords , and 40 types of fungus.

These are the good guys though and help us to keep ourselves clean.

HOWEVER
This bacteria and fungus needs some assistance from soaps and showers. Even if you're not a sweaty, you still getting dirty, coming in to contact with bacteria all. The. Time.

And no shower means all that bad bacteria is running rampant. If you rub your eyes or pick your nose , then you run the risk also of getting sick.

Being oily and salty by nature, our skin can become irritated and blemished if we don't wash it on a regular basis.

That bad smell two days in?
It's not actually body odor. It's - brace yourself - GASES given off by bacteria consuming body protein and fatty acids.

These gases can lead to as many as 30 bad smells.

You have been warned.
