Leap Motion's Second Annual 3D Jam Is Underway

Leap Motion announced that the submissions for the company's second annual 3D Jam are now open. Leap Motion said that over 1,300 developers have signed up for 3D Jam, which is close to double the number of submissions received from last year's event. Leap Motion also noted that this year's competitors come from all over the world, with 80 different countries being represented, twice the number of participants in last year's event.

 

Leap Motion first announced signups for 3D Jam 2.0 in July, and the company has been accepting new developer signups ever since. Submissions are now open for those who feel confident that their apps are ready, but the cutoff for submissions is only six weeks out. Leap Motion will accept submissions until 11:59:59pm PT on November 9. Although submissions are open now, the company will still accept developer signups for the duration of the contest, so if you haven't yet, there's still time.

 

The 3D Jam will be split into two submission categories. AR/VR is specifically for experiences made for head mounted displays (HMDs), and Open will cover any apps made for desktop, hardware hacks and Internet of Things apps.

 

Leap Motion has dedicated a larger chunk of the prize pool to the AR/VR submissions. There will be prizes awarded for the top five creations, ranging from $10,000 down to $1000, as well as two community favorites that will be awarded $500. Open track submissions will compete for a $10,000 grand prize, $7,500 second prize, and a $5,000 third prize. There will be one community favorite in this category that will win $500.

 

 

In addition to the cash prizes, Leap Motion has some other great prizes including software licenses and hardware. Nine lucky developers will be awarded Unity Pro licenses valued at $4,500. Two copies of Unity Suites valued at $1,500 are also up for grabs. On the hardware side, Leap will be giving away six OSVR hacker development kits worth $200 each and six $650 Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics cards.
