Microsoft's Cortana On Android: It's Almost As Good (And Creepy) As Google Now

Microsoft  released Cortana, the voice-activated digital assistant built into Windows 10 and Windows phones, for all Android phone users in a public beta on Monday.

That app competes directly with Google GOOGL Now, the digital assistant built into all Android phones. I put both through their paces to see whether it’s time for Android users to make the leap to something new.

Both were surprisingly good; the answer may rest in how you feel about your personal data–and which desktop platforms you prefer.

Why you should use a digital assistant ?

Digital assistants on mobile phones are an incredible way to get information quickly, especially if you’re going hands free. Early verions weren’t tremendously useful Siri in particular took some early abuse for not understanding her owners’ commands–but most apps perform at a high level now, thanks in part to better algorithms for voice recognition in noisy environments.

They work best when they have an uncomfortably good knowledge of your personal life. Given access to your calendar, your calls, your messages, your email, your various accounts, your contacts, even your Web browsing history, they assemble a computerized picture of what you like, where you’ll be and what you’ll want next. You can command them to call people by name or relationship to you; add new calendar entries manually, or in some cases, automatically; or save notes for yourself.

On a more sophisticated level, you can save reminders for yourself, including those that pop up when you have some other trigger (a reminder when someone in particular calls you, for example.) And good digital assistants integrate seamlessly to Web searches, dropping you to a search results window when your request doesn’t fall into their standard, extensive list of commands.

The creepiest–and coolest–function of digital assistants is their ability to anticipate your next move, providing Jarvis-like warnings of the issues that may face you during the day. They might warn you about the weather tomorrow, or tell you that it’s time for you to leave for your next appointment.
