The Spicomellus is “totally unlike anything else that we have ever seen,” said the co-lead of a study on the dinosaur, which lived some 165 million years ago. You think you know a dinosaur, and then it turns out it had 3-foot spikes protruding from its neck, a weapon on its tail and extravagant armor. The creature’s presence some 165 million years ago in what is now Morocco has been known for years. But only now has the Spicomellus been revealed in all its bizarre beauty, forcing a rethink among scientists. “This dinosaur is totally unlike anything else that we have ever seen,” paleontologist Susannah Maidment told NBC News in a phone interview. She co-led a team of researchers studying the Jurassic-era beast’s fossilized remains in the Atlas Mountains near the Moroccan town of Boulemane. Their evolution “is shrouded in mystery due to a poor fossil record,” according to the study. A single rib fragment described in 2021 offered our only partial view of the Spicomellus — until now. As well as short spikes covering its back, the dinosaur had a pelvic shield and two large spikes poking out above its hips. It also had fused tail vertebrae that suggested a weapon at the end of its tail. The “ornate armor” may have served two roles, namely defense against large meat-eating dinosaurs and as a display to attract mates, according to the study. Newly Studied 'Punk' Ankylosaur Is 'World's Strangest Dinosaur' Bone fragments reveal the dinosaur's collarbone. The Trustees of the Natural History Museum / Cover Images via AP “We just couldn’t believe how weird it was and how unlike any other dinosaur, or indeed any other animal we know of, alive or extinct,” said Richard Butler, project co-lead and a paleontologist at the University of Birmingham in England. The chance to see and study the Spicomellus fossils was “spine-tingling,” said Butler. It wasn’t just those involved in the project who were enthused. “This is truly one of the weirdest, wackiest dinosaurs I’ve ever seen,” said Steve Brusatte, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh who was not involved in the research. “It has bony spikes protruding from all over its body, like it’s some kind of reptilian porcupine,” he said Thursday. “If you were a meat-eating dinosaur living back in the Jurassic period, you would stay well away from this animal.” Brusatte added: “It’s a great example of how there are still so many new things to discover. Until these fossils were found, we had no inclination that an animal this fantastic had ever lived.” Maidment, the study co-lead, said the discovery showed that a lot more research needs to be done in Africa, with countries like Morocco an untapped gold mine for dinosaur research. “It is wildly undersampled compared to the other continents,” said Maidment, from London’s National History Museum. Maidment said that the Spicomellus project, which actually began in 2018, faced several hurdles along the way, including the Covid-19 pandemic. The U.K. team was set to fly out to meet its Moroccan counterparts for the project when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a lockdown, ultimately delaying their plans until 2022. Despite those challenges, the research project has proved to be a major step forward for science in Morocco. “This study is helping to drive forward Moroccan science. We’ve never seen dinosaurs like this before, and there’s still a lot more this region has to offer,” said Driss Ouarhache, who led the Moroccan team. One of the company's quirkiest models gets a modern makeover. Although not fully developed by the Volkswagen Group, the Felicia was the first Skoda to benefit from German engineering know-how. Launched in 1994 as a replacement for the Favorit, it remained on sale until the Fabia arrived at the turn of the century. During its six-year run, the subcompact hatchback was offered in several body styles, including a pickup. That version even spawned the quirky Felicia Fun, of which only 4,216 units were ever built. Marketed at the time as a leisure vehicle, the Felicia Fun’s party piece was a sliding rear partition behind the front seats. When moved to the back, it created space for a pair of rear seats while still leaving room for cargo. A canvas roof protected passengers riding in the open rear section. Skoda also fitted a rear spoiler and painted all examples bright yellow, although buyers could add a splash of individuality with green or orange accents on certain body panels. Fast-forward to 2025, and the Felicia Fun is back, though not in the way you remember it. Skoda has revived the cheerful trucklet as a digital concept. The one-off is part of the brand’s “Icons Get a Makeover” series, which also includes the previously mentioned Favorit. French designer Julien Petitseigneur reinterpreted the model using Skoda’s "Modern Solid" design language, giving the diminutive truck a contemporary look while staying faithful to its 1990s roots. He envisioned a “cool beach vibe” and even created an interior. Naturally, for 2025, the cabin is dominated by screens, yet the blocky dashboard nods to the past by resembling chunky CRT monitors. Nostalgia runs deeper with graphics inspired by video games that many of us grew up playing. Unlike the original, however, the reborn Felicia Fun is strictly a two-seater, abandoning its predecessor’s 2+2 layout in favor of extra cargo space. Even so, it’s a clever experiment, though only a virtual one. In today’s industry, where bean counters call the shots, it’s unlikely the VW Group would ever approve another playful pickup like this. Skoda hasn’t built a pickup since the Felicia bowed out. In the 2010s, the company considered offering its own version of the Amarok, but the project never materialized. Earlier this year, however, students from its vocational school transformed the Superb flagship into a one-off pickup with a weird door and a sliding tailgate designed to carry a bike rack. Iga Swiatek survived a second-set scare to beat the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday, as the 2022 champion battled back on Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the US Open third round. The second seed has looked like a top contender after picking up her sixth major at Wimbledon and clinching the Cincinnati tune-up tournament and she cleaned up some mid-match errors to keep her campaign on track. She will play 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya in the third round. Swiatek was in control as she broke in the second game when her opponent hit the ball long and she saved a break point in the third game with an unreturnable serve. The Pole broke her opponent from the baseline again in the sixth game, as Lamens was unable to fire off a single winner in the first set. It looked as though it would be a similar story when Lamens went down an early break in the second set, but the Dutchwoman showed signs of life when she hit a backhand winner that just hit the baseline to level it in the fourth game. Swiatek retaliated in the seventh game, sending over a lethal backhand to take the advantage back, only to see her lead evaporate again with a double fault in the eighth and she sent a backhand into the net on set point. Down four games to one in the third set, Lamens narrowed the lead when she survived a 12-shot rally on break point in the sixth game, but it was too little too late as Swiatek cruised through her final two service games. KIRUNA, Sweden (AP) — Forget Philadelphia: In the far north of Sweden, locals and tourists alike chow down on Arctic cheesesteaks, their hoagie rolls piled high with moose and reindeer meat. At Stejk Street Food in Kiruna, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, owners Zebastian Bohman and Cecilia Abrahamsson modeled their specialty after the famous Philly cheesesteak. Last week, thousands of visitors descended upon Kiruna to watch as the historic Kiruna Church moved 5 kilometers (3 miles) east as part of the town’s relocation. The journey was necessary because the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine is threatening to swallow the town. Hundreds of those spectators dined at Stejk Street Food, including Don and Anita Haymes, tourists from the United Kingdom. They’ve stopped by Stejk Street Food three years running during their trips to northern Sweden. This year, the couple dined on reindeer meat cooked and served by employees wearing shirts that proclaimed “I’m glad Rudolph is dead!” Just don’t tell their grandchildren.
