Combining the strategy of FTL with the galactic ambition of Starfield, a new, stunning space FPS game also takes cues from Left 4 Dead Starfield drew a variety of criticisms, but there was one complaint that was consistent across every player of Bethesda’s latest RPG – you couldn’t move seamlessly between your ship and the surface of the planet. Admittedly vast and ambitious, procedural generation in Starfield also left many of the 1,000 planets feeling uninhabited and dull. They were pretty to look at, maybe, but whenever you touched down on terra firma, it felt as if the makers of Starfield had suddenly disappeared, and you were aimlessly wandering a directionless, nothingy landscape. From a new studio composed of former Minecraft and Hazelight developers, one upcoming co-op FPS game feels like the emotional experience of Starfield as it was meant to be. Ship and systems management borrows from strategy roguelike FTL. There’s even a hint of Valve’s Left 4 Dead. At GDC in San Francisco, PCGamesN goes hands-on with what could be 2024’s biggest breakthrough hit. Jump Ship comes from Keepsake Games, a new studio combining talent from Minecraft maker Mojang, as well as Hazelight, the developer behind It Takes Two and A Way Out. Conceptually, it’s a co-op FPS game that aims to capture the richness of the classic space adventure. A team of up to four pilots a gigantic spaceship and is free to explore the galaxy and complete missions as they choose. The game breaks down into essentially two stages. While onboard your faithful craft, a deceptively simple power and systems management hub needs constant attention. If you want to go faster, someone needs to yank fuses from the shield batteries and shove them into the engine block. If you want more firepower, one of you needs to go down to the weapons bay and link more guns to the bridge computer. At times, you can coast peacefully along just enjoying the scenery, but when asteroid storms hit, or pirates appear on the starboard bow, the entire team needs to jump to action stations and rapidly respond to keep everything online. While one person shoots and steers, the rest can either put out fires (there are actual fires) in the engine room, reroute systems, or head on deck to helm the exterior canons. Stay alive long enough and you can make it to the informal second half of the Jump Ship experience, whereby you touch down on the planet surface to complete missions and objectives, and recover supplies. First of all, you can transition seamlessly from ship to ground. No loading screens. No wait times. Using a jet pack you can hop from the deck of your star cruiser down to the terrain – and back again – in one high-powered swoop. The same applies during aerial combat or the aforementioned asteroid attacks. All four players can move around the entire ship, and its outside, completely at will with no disruptions. Every planet is handcrafted. Every mission is designed and built from the ground up. Jump Ship doesn’t have a fully explorable, totally open-ended sandbox universe – instead, you access your next mission from a computer table in the middle of the bridge. However, there are still extended sections and battles out in the vastness of space itself, and when you arrive into the atmosphere of a new planet, fight your way to the surface, and then seamlessly set down and jump overboard, it feels incredible. “It’s really important to fulfill all the space fantasies,” game director Filip Coulianos tells PCGamesN exclusively. “People ask us ‘are there classes?’ but we’ve tried to stay away from that – whatever you have in your hands is your class. If you’re holding the fire extinguisher, you are the firefighter. We have a tiny bit of an upgrade path for players, so you can buy suits, helmets and stuff like that, which might give you a little buff. But we don’t want it to be like, ‘oh, yeah, only let that person repair because they have a class that makes them so much better than everybody else.” Teamwork and communication are fundamental in Jump Ship. At times, it feels like a sci-fi Lethal Company, as you each take your positions and complete missions in tandem. Once you’re on the ground and you’ve located a mission site, one person might stay close to the computer console that opens a silo door, while two more keep the enemies at bay. The final crewmember is responsible for slipping inside, grabbing what you came for, and hightailing it back to the ship. One flies. One shoots. One repairs. One puts out fires. Imagine the scramble scenes from Star Trek, shared between you and three friends. There’s no procedural generation. Alongside the handcrafted worlds and missions built by Keepsake, Jump Ship also uses a ‘director,’ similar to Valve’s Left 4 Dead, which summons in-game events based on your behavior. Get a bit too wealthy, and you might find yourself targeted more often by pirates. Sit stationary for too long, and expect a meteor shower to start obliterating your ship. Despite a small team of around ten people, Coulianos explains why building Jump Ship by hand is vitally important. “If we want to make this giant, unending world, we wouldn’t have control over the pacing of stuff. But this way, we can jam in all the interesting things and design a good path, and put options where they make sense. Everyone’s time is really valuable. So if you’re just flying forward for 15 minutes in some big generated world, that’s terrible gameplay. We live today in a world where AI and algorithms are becoming drastically more advanced, but I’ve not seen anything produced there that’s remotely as good as a talented human being, building an environment When you’ve finished Jump Ship’s many missions, you can mix things up with a variety of modifier cards. Maybe you want to revisit some of the toughest ops, only this time enemies do ten times more damage. Or perhaps you want to go around again, but with a vastly increased chance of engine failure and ship malfunctions. Rather than create something endless and recursive, the goal is to provide a large variety of substantive new missions and permutations. “We’re [the developers at Keepsake] becoming parents,” Coulianos says. “We don’t have that much time. So like, just having players traveling with nothing happening to us is like ‘no.’ We want every minute to be rich – rich without being too stressful. It doesn’t have to be full of action all the time, of course. But I think that’s important.” We’re still waiting on a precise date, but Jump Ship is currently scheduled to hit early access in late 2024. Around the world, policymakers are coming to grips with the implications of artificial intelligence and its role in the broader digital and tech ecosystem. While different countries have different priorities and governance structures, all have reasons to worry about the technology's potential to cause harm. Since serving for a decade as a member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, Marietje Schaake has become a leading transatlantic voice in debates about technology and the policy responses to digital innovations. Now the international policy director at Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center and international policy fellow at Stanford HAI (Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence), she weighs in regularly on the risks of privately governed AI, social media- and AI-augmented disinformation, and related topics, including as a member of the United Nations AI Advisory Body’s Executive Committee. MS: We all have seen the cut-throat competition between the United States and China over the past years. The differences between democracies and autocracies are inevitably also playing out in the way governments approach AI. Another division is between countries that can focus on regulation and investment, and the many governments of developing economies that are concerned more about access and inclusion. These unique economic and social contexts need to be appreciated when we analyze the impact of AI. We are dealing with a technology that can be deployed both to advance scientific breakthroughs and to intensify state surveillance. It would help to see policymakers address more of these specifics. PS: As always, Europe seems to be ahead of the US when it comes to AI regulation. Could you briefly walk us through the main strengths and weaknesses of the draft AI Act, and what regulators elsewhere might learn from Europe’s recent legislative debate? MS: The European Union has indeed been ahead of the curve. In fact, when work started on the AI Act, many cautioned that it was too soon. But now, with market developments racing ahead, one could say that the recent political agreement on the law came in the nick of time. The AI Act is primarily designed to mitigate the risks associated with how AI applications are used. Only at a later stage did lawmakers add requirements for foundation models (the underlying trained datasets that power all the chatbots and other AI tools being released into the market). Those later provisions represent an effort to regulate the technology itself. While I see the EU as an important values-based frontrunner in regulating AI, the tensions between regulating uses and regulating the technology have not been resolved. That is something all regulators will have to deal with sooner or later. PS: Since Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation entered into force to much fanfare in 2018, the law has drawn much criticism for being difficult to interpret, implement, and enforce, and for generally falling short of expectations. Are these concerns justified? What do critics get right, and what are they missing? MS: With the amount of hype surrounding the GDPR, it could only disappoint. In practice, it will always be challenging to harmonize 27 national data-protection regimes into one framework that applies to everyone – governments and companies alike. The good news is that EU leaders foresaw the need for periodic reviews and improvements, which are now being undertaken. As with AI, enforcement will need to be shored up to ensure the GDPR does not go down in history as a paper tiger. PS: In an ideal world, what kind of disinformation safeguards would you like to see ahead of the European Parliament and US national elections this year? Are we still ultimately left with no choice but to trust figures like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg to police election interference campaigns? MS: Unfortunately, companies (with their own changing policies and priorities) are setting the guardrails of our information ecosystem. Many have laid off or substantially downsized their “trust and safety” teams. Even worse, YouTube declared last year that, as a matter of policy, it will no longer remove or take action against videos peddling blatant lies about the 2020 election. It will not have escaped anyone that those lies form the basis for Donald Trump’s 2024 election campaign. Not only are disinformation researchers being politically targeted and sidelined, but many recent measures designed to improve the conditions of online debate are being reversed. On top of that, AI – and particularly generative AI – could be a gamechanger for elections worldwide, given its ability to generate effectively infinite volumes of disinformation and target that information more precisely. We urgently need more transparency so that independent researchers can study the effects of changes in corporate policies. Right now, most of that information and data is shielded behind intellectual-property protections. For its part, the EU is taking important steps to prevent the abuse of “dark patterns” (deceptive user interfaces designed to trick people into making harmful decisions, such as opting in to invasive levels of data tracking), and to regulate the targeting of political ads (which are not permitted to use sensitive personal information). The EU has also agreed on new rules requiring that all political ads “be clearly labeled as such and must indicate who paid for them, how much, to which elections, referendum, or regulatory process they are linked, and whether they have been targeted.” These are important measures. But I fear they will not come in time for the next EU elections, or for elections in other parts of the world. With democracy already under unprecedented strain worldwide, we may soon bear witness to a major experiment in technologically augmented mani[CENSORED]tion. PS: Should TikTok be banned? Given China’s intelligence laws, there is ample reason for concern about how corporate data can end up being used by the state. Many in Europe had deep concerns following revelations concerning how the US National Security Agency (NSA) could use tech-company data for intelligence gathering and law enforcement. That never led to a ban, however. In general, protecting children from addictive apps is a good idea. I would prefer that decisions about banning the use of an app like TikTok be based on transparent security or child-protection rules that apply equally to all. Boa Constrictor Boa constrictors are powerful snakes and stealthy hunters. They live in tropical climates throughout most of Central and South America, where they hunt at night. The boa's hunting technique is generally to ambush prey, such as rats, birds, monkeys, or wild pigs. The snake swallows its prey whole. Food is digested by strong stomach acids. After a large meal, a boa doesn't need to eat again for weeks. A boa constrictor grows throughout its whole life, which can be 20 to 30 years. An adult boa will generally weigh more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms) and grow to about 13 feet (4 meters) long. Boa constrictors tend to live alone. Mother boas give birth to about 60 babies at a time! A baby boa is on its own from the start. It is born with the instinct, or built-in knowledge, of how to hunt. It also has an instinct to hide to stay safe from predators. The baby boa's diet changes as it grows. The bigger it gets, the bigger its preferred prey becomes. Several subspecies of Boa constrictor have been described in the past, but many of these are poorly differentiated, and further research may redefine many of them. Some appear to be based more on location rather than on biological differences.[10] Boa imperator,[11] Boa nebulosa,[3] Boa orophias and Boa sigma[12] have all been elevated to full species status. The boa constrictor is a large snake, although it is only modestly sized in comparison to other large snakes, such as the reticulated python, Burmese python, or the occasionally sympatric green anaconda, and can reach lengths from 3 to 13 ft (0.91 to 3.96 m) depending on the locality and the availability of suitable prey.[16] Clear sexual dimorphism is seen in the species, with females generally being larger in both length and girth than males. The usual size of mature female boas is between 7 and 10 ft (2.1 and 3.0 m) whereas males are between 6 and 8 ft (1.8 and 2.4 m).[17] Females commonly exceed 10 ft (3.0 m), particularly in captivity, where lengths up to 12 ft (3.7 m) or even 14 ft (4.3 m) can be seen.[18] The largest documented non-stretched dry skin is deposited at Zoologische Staatssammlung München (ZSM 4961/2012) and measures 14.6 ft (4.45 m) without head.[19] A report of a boa constrictor growing up to 18.5 ft (5.6 m) was later found to be a misidentified green anaconda.[20] The boa constrictor is a heavy-bodied snake, and large specimens can weigh up to 27 kg (60 lb). With a bare-bones interior, an extreme aero kit, and a dinner-table-size rear wing, this racing version of the Ioniq 5 N will compete in the eN1 electric racing series in South Korea at the end of April. Hyundai revealed the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup car at a practice session leading up to the 2024 Hyundai N Festival, a one-make race series to be held in South Korea in late April. The Cup car is based on the roadgoing Ioniq 5 N and features racing upgrades including slick tires and a stripped interior. The new race car will make its debut at the Inje Speedium circuit in South Korea on April 27 as part of the new eN1 class of racing. With the introduction of the new Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup car, Hyundai is taking its Ioniq 5 N racing in an all-new electric professional racing series. The new Cup car builds on the already sporty Ioniq 5 N, the performance version of the Ionia 5 electric SUV, bringing it up to the demanding level required for professional racing. | Hyundai started by giving the car a complete makeover. The front end is all new with a large lip and prominent dive planes protruding from a more functional front bumper. New over-fenders round out the eN1's body-kit changes, while a gargantuan rear wing sits proudly at the rear of the car. We want whatever sort of weight-loss diet Hyundai used to get the Ioniq 5 N so svelte. While the roadgoing car weighs just over 4900 pounds, Hyundai estimates the Cup car tips the scales at closer to 4350 pounds. Unsurprisingly, the secret to shedding all those pounds is simply removing the excess stuff. Gone are the bulky 21-inch wheels with all their unnecessary weight. They've been replaced by a set of lightweight 18-inch forged wheels wrapped in motorsport slicks. The standard glass windows are swapped for lighter polycarbonate replacements, and the hood is replaced with a duplicate made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). The interior is stripped, with Hyundai removing anything deemed unnecessary. The regular seats are gone, with a lone bucket seat for the driver remaining Adding some weight back to the eN1, Hyundai is fitting each car with an FIA-compliant roll cage and fire extinguishers to improve safety. Under the bodywork, the powertrain is untouched. The dual motors on the eN1 Cup car produce the same 641 horsepower as those on the road car. The race car also inherits the 84.0 kWh of usable energy from the standard car's battery, which remains good for charging from 10-80 percent in 18 minutes. Hyundai hasn't released performance figures, but our estimates put the standard car at roughly 3.1 seconds to 60 mph, so the eN1 should be quick. Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Vontae Davis has died aged 35. Davis, who played for Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills, was found dead at his grandmother's house in Southwest Ranches, Florida. The police report confirmed no foul play was involved and the investigation was still open. Davis, who played in back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2014 and 2015, retired mid-match while playing for the Bills against Los Angeles Chargers in 2018. His 10-year career saw him finish with 22 interceptions, 97 passes defended and 395 tackles. "Extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Vontae Davis," Colts owner Jim Irsay posted on X. "A great guy, team-mate, player. My prayers to Vontae's family." The Dolphins, who drafted Davis as a first-round pick in 2009, said: "We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of former Dolphins CB Vontae Davis and extend our deepest condolences to his family & loved ones during this difficult time." The Bills added: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Vontae Davis. We are thinking of his friends, family, and loved ones during this difficult time." These days, aggressive behavior seems out of control. It's not uncommon to see people fighting, in homes, at sporting events, on public transportation, in school, or even at the work place. Intervening in a physical or verbal fight can be dangerous, but sometimes it is the right thing to do. There are several strategies you can try to de-escalate these types of situations. 1- Intervening in a Fight Stay calm. If two other people are starting to fight, you should try to diffuse the tension by appearing relaxed.[1] Use a soothing tone of voice, nonthreatening body language (for example, keep your hands raised in front of your chest), and slow movements. 2- Assess the situation quickly. Fights move quickly so you won't have a lot of time. You need to determine how serious the situation is, if you are in danger, whether you need to call for help, and what strategies might work best to stop the fight in this particular situation. Try to determine whether anyone has a weapon or is likely to reach for an object to use as a weapon (for example, a bottle in a bar fight). If so, call the police and do not intervene. Try to move other onlookers, especially children, to safety. Notice whether the fighters have "back up," often in the form of onlookers who are egging on the fighters. Gang fights and similar situations are unpredictable and you should not try to intervene. Look around for any large objects that you can push between the fighters, like trash cans, desks, or anything else that is big but possible for you to quickly move into place. 1- Call the police. If either fighter has a weapon of any kind, call the police and do not try to intervene. You should also call the police if you are physically unable to restrain a fighter or fear that your safety would be in jeopardy if you intervened. Unless a police officer happens to be in the vicinity, it may be too late by the time they arrive. If it is safe to do so, try to break up the fight yourself while you wait for them to arrive. 4-Get help from another onlooker If there is anyone else within hearing range, get them to help you break up the fight before attempting to do it yourself. In situations like this, onlookers don't generally stop to help unless you tell them specifically. So instead of yelling "Someone help me!" look someone in the eye and say "Help me stop the fight!"[2] If possible, choose someone who is larger than the fighters and looks strong and athletic. But in a pinch, any able-bodied adult will do! Don't leave the scene of a fight to get help unless you have to, especially if the fighters are juveniles. Former US President Donald Trump has posted a $175m (£140m) bond in his New York civil fraud case, staving off asset seizures by the state. Mr Trump was originally ordered to pay the full $464m judgement against him, but an appeals court said he could pay the smaller sum within 10 days. He was found in February to have fraudulently inflated property values. The Republican denies wrongdoing and says the case is a political witch hunt by the Democratic prosecutor. If he loses his appeal, Mr Trump will have to come up with the $464m. His lawyers had argued before the appellate court that securing a bond for that amount would be a "practical impossibility". Monday's bond payment will - for now at least - spare Mr Trump the humiliation of seeing his real estate assets such as Trump Tower in Manhattan and his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida taken away from him. In a statement, his lawyer Alina Habba said: "As promised, President Trump has posted bond. He looks forward to vindicating his rights on appeal and overturning this unjust verdict." The fraud case against Mr Trump was filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, in 2022. Trump's media company tumbles in stock market Trump gagged again after he slams judge's daughter Justice Arthur Engoron, also a Democrat, broadly sided with Ms James' argument that Mr Trump should pay a steep price for fraudulently misrepresenting his assets in order to get more favourable loans and interest rates over the course of years. Mr Trump argued the case had no victims because the banks got repaid with interest and no financial institution sued him for the exaggerated estimates of his net worth. Justice Engoron also barred Mr Trump from running a New York business for three years. He was also prohibited from getting loans from New York financial institutions over the same period. The ruling placed Mr Trump, who has said in depositions and on social media that he has $400m or $500m in cash on hand, under a serious financial crunch. Forbes Magazine currently estimates his net worth at $5.7bn - it soared after the parent company of his social media platform Truth Social went public last week. Around the same time he lost the fraud case, Mr Trump had to secure a $91m bond after losing an unrelated defamation lawsuit brought by the writer E Jean Carroll. To delay enforcement of the penalty while he appealed the civil fraud case, Mr Trump initially sought a bond from 30 companies but was unable to secure one, his lawyers wrote in court filings. In addition to reducing the amount he would need to post last week, the appeals court also suspended the ban on Mr Trump's ability to run a business and get loans while they consider his challenge to Justice Engoron's ruling. It could take months, or longer, for the case to be decided. In the meantime, Mr Trump's first criminal trial - over his alleged attempt to fraudulently conceal hush-money payments to an adult film star ahead of the 2016 election - is scheduled to begin on 15 April in Manhattan.He has also been charged in two additional cases with trying to overturn his 2020 election loss against President Joe Biden and over his handling of classified documents after leaving office.
