Elon Musk says he is launching a new political party, weeks after dramatically falling out with US President Donald Trump. The billionaire announced on his social media platform X that he had set up the America Party, billing it as a challenge to the Republican and Democratic two-party system. However, it is unclear if the party has been formally registered with US election authorities. Musk, who was born outside of the US and is thus ineligible to run for the US presidency, does not say who will lead it. He first raised the prospect of forming a party during his public feud with Trump, which saw him leave his role in the administration and engage in a vicious public spat with his former ally. During that row, Musk posted a poll on X asking users if there should be a new political party in the US. Referencing that poll in his post on Saturday, Musk wrote: "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom." As of Saturday, the Federal Electoral Commission had not published documents indicating the party had been formally registered. While there have been high-profile players outside the traditional two-party system in US politics, it is difficult for them to gain strong enough nationwide po[CENSORED]rity to pose a real threat. In the presidential election last year, candidates from the likes of Libertarian Party, the Green Party and the People's Party all tried in vain to stop Trump or his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, from winning. Musk was until recently a core supporter of Trump, dancing alongside him during election rallies last year and bringing his four-year-old son to meet Trump in the Oval Office. He was also Trump's key financial backer: Musk spent $250m (£187m) to help him regain office. After the election, he was appointed to lead the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which was tasked with identifying swingeing cuts in the federal budget. His fallout with Trump began when he left the administration in May and publicly criticised Trump's tax and spending plans. The legislation - which Trump has called his "big, beautiful bill" - was narrowly passed by Congress and signed into law by the president this week. The massive law includes huge spending commitments and tax cuts, and is estimated to add more than $3tn to the US deficit over the next decade. Crucially for Musk, who owns electric-vehicle giant Tesla, Trump's bill does not focus on green transition or subsidies for products like Teslas. "Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far," Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social, this week. "Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa." Trump threatened to have Doge look into subsidies in favour of Musk's companies, alluding also to the billionaire's other businesses. Musk also owns SpaceX, which launches rockets for the US government, and Starlink, which provides satellite service for US and European defence forces. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1dn04lvgpdo

When the 18-year-old Brazilian smashed home an equaliser for Palmeiras against the Blues from an acute angle on Saturday - Chelsea fans could have been forgiven for feeling a little bit excited. Yes, he had just equalised against their side in the Club World Cup quarter-final but it was also a thrilling glimpse of the talent Chelsea have signed in a deal that could eventually be worth £52m. A late Palmeiras own goal meant it is ultimately Chelsea who are looking forward to a semi-final against Fluminense, but Estevao's last game for the Brazilian side was certainly a memorable one. The Blues beat the likes of Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Manchester City to sign the Palmeiras wonderkid last summer - but allowed him to stay in Brazil last season and to play for them in this summer's Club World Cup. And, while they may have been regretting that decision as his direct running and silky skills tormented them in Philadelphia, anyone connected with Chelsea could not fail but to be excited by what they saw. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said: "I'm happy because we won and also happy because Estevao scored, the perfect night. "He is very good, a huge talent, fantastic player. The only thing is when you come from South America or another part of the world, you need to adapt. "We are going to help him to adapt. We have no doubt he will be an important player for Chelsea." The forward was a constant threat down Palmeiras' right, had the most touches in Chelsea's box for his side (eight) and was awarded man of the match. Blues midfielder Cole Palmer, who talked to Estevao after the final whistle, added: "You can see he is a top player, so it is very exciting. "I just said to him we are excited for him to join - but he didn't understand a single word I said!" Estevao and Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira were tearful at the post-match news conference as they reflected on their time together. Ferreira said: "I spoke before with Maresca and told him 'you bought an amazing player but more than this you bought an amazing person'. "You need to embrace him. In the beginning he will make mistakes but he is an amazing player with a lot of skill. He is a player who can win a game alone." Estevao emphasised how grateful he is for the chance in the game that Palmeiras gave him. "Palmeiras opened the door for me. I was deeply happy in Palmeiras and my family knows how happy I was," he said. "I'm very happy I could score a goal to help my club. Unfortunately this wasn't the result we wanted but we gave our best and now I am moving on." LINK

As Donald Trump cheered the passage of his self-styled, and officially named, Big Beautiful Budget Bill through Congress this week, long-sown seeds of doubt about the scale and sustainability of US borrowing from the rest of the world sprouted anew. Trump's tax-cutting budget bill is expected to add at least $3 trillion (£2.2 trillion) to the US's already eye-watering $37tn (£27tn) debt pile. There is no shortage of critics of the plan, not least Trump's former ally Elon Musk, who has called it a "disgusting abomination". The growing debt pile leaves some to wonder whether there is a limit to how much the rest of the world will lend Uncle Sam. Those doubts have been showing up recently in the weaker value of the dollar and the higher interest rate investors are demanding to lend money to America. It needs to borrow this money to make up the difference between what it earns and what it spends every year. Since the beginning of this year, the dollar has fallen 10% against the pound and 15% against the euro. Although US borrowing costs have been steady overall, the difference between the interest rates paid on longer-term loans versus shorter-term loans - what's known as the yield curve - has increased, or steepened, signalling increased doubts about the long-term sustainability of US borrowing. And that is despite the fact that the US has lowered interest rates more slowly than the EU and the UK, which would normally make the dollar stronger because investors can get higher interest rates on bank deposits. The founder of the world's biggest hedge fund, Ray Dalio, believes that US borrowing is at a crossroads. On its current trajectory he estimates the US will soon be spending $10tn a year in loan and interest repayments. "I am confident that the [US] government's financial condition is at an inflection point because, if this is not dealt with now, the debts will build up to levels where they can't be managed without great trauma," he says. On Wednesday, Emma Raducanu produced one of her best performances "in a long time" to beat 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova and move into the Wimbledon third round. But backing up that victory to reach the last 16 will probably require an even better display from the British number one on Friday. Standing in her way is Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one and overwhelming favourite for the women's singles title. Raducanu has made sound progress to climb back into the world's top 40 this season, but the evidence has shown there is still a clear gulf between the 22-year-old and the leading stars. Both of her Grand Slam appearances this season were ended in ruthless fashion by five-time major champion Iga Swiatek - Raducanu winning only one game at the Australian Open and three at the French Open in a pair of demoralising defeats. Coco Gauff, who went on to win the Roland Garros title, also proved too much of a step up in class for Raducanu on the Rome clay. The challenge for Raducanu is discovering how she can test the very best. "I think I need more weapons. I think I need to be able to hit the ball with better quality more often," Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, told BBC Sport before facing Sabalenka. "I think I need to serve better. I think I need to hit better on the move. There are a lot of things I need to do better. "Beating a top player like Marketa, who has won this tournament, was obviously a really positive thing for me and a really good marker. "But I need to bridge the gap to the very, very top." LINK

The man we spoke to, who said he had worked at all four of the GHF distribution sites, described a culture of impunity with few rules or controls. He said contractors were given no clear rules of engagement or standard operating procedures, and were told by one team leader: "if you feel threatened, shoot – shoot to kill and ask questions later". The culture in the company, he said, felt like "we're going into Gaza so it's no rules. Do what you want." "If a Palestinian is walking away from the site and not demonstrating any hostile intent, and we're shooting warning shots at them regardless, we are wrong, we are criminally negligent," he told me. He told us that each site had CCTV monitoring the activity in the area, and GHF insistence that no one there had been hurt or shot at was "an absolute bare-faced lie". GHF said that gunfire heard in footage shared with the BBC was coming from Israeli forces. Team leaders referred to Gazans as "zombie hordes", the former contractor said, "insinuating that these people have no value." The man also said Palestinians were coming to harm in other ways at GHF sites, for example by being hit by debris from stun grenades, being sprayed with mace or being pushed by the crowds into razor wire. He said he had witnessed several occasions in which Palestinians appeared to have been seriously hurt, including one man who had a full can of pepper spray in his face, and a woman who he said was hit with the metal part of a stun grenade, improperly fired into a crowd. "This metal piece hit her directly in the head and she dropped to the ground, not moving," he said. "I don't know if she was dead. I know for a fact she was unconscious and completely limp." LINK
