  5. There is a "worrying trend" of rising cases of Covid-19 in Ireland and "some new clusters", according to Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan. No deaths were recorded in Ireland in the last 24 hours and the total number of deaths is 1,735. Twenty four new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed, bringing the total of confirmed cases to 25,462. Dr Holohan said a new cluster, in the north west, was travel-related and originated in Iraq. He urged people who have made bookings to travel abroad for holidays "not to go ahead with that booking" rather than risk picking up Covid-19 or bringing it back to their community. He said officials were "genuinely very concerned" about the increasing "role and risk of travel", RTÉ reports. Earlier on Monday, the chair of the Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, Prof Philip Nolan, said non-essential travel outside of Ireland is too big a risk to take. Dr Holohan said there was a "large number of contacts" linked to some people recently diagnosed with the virus, particularly among young people. He said more than 20 people had to be tested as close contacts of some individual cases, which compared to an average two to three contacts typically reported in April.

  7. The DNC has said delegates will not be asked to travel to the event, but it remains to be seen if there will be an in-person audience Democrats will hold an almost entirely virtual presidential nominating convention in Milwaukee using live broadcasts and online streaming, party officials said Wednesday. Joe Biden plans to accept the presidential nomination in person during the 17-20 August convention, but it remains to be seen whether there will be a significant in-person audience there to see it. The Democratic National Committee said in a statement that official business, including the votes to nominate Biden and his yet-to-be-named running mate, will take place virtually, with delegates being asked not to travel to Milwaukee. Joe Biden and Barack Obama raise $11m in first 2020 fundraiser together It’s the latest sign of how much the Covid-19 pandemic has upended American life and the 2020 presidential election, leading Biden and the party to abandon the usual trappings of an event that draws tens of thousands of people to the host city to mark the start of the general election campaign. Not even during the civil war or second world war did the two major parties abandon in-person conventions with crowded arenas.
  8. A 258-year old bottle of Cognac — one of just three of its kind still in existence — sold for £118,850 (€131,990) in an online auction on Thursday, Sotheby's has revealed. The bottle of amber elixir was produced in 1762 by the Maison Gauthier in France and is the oldest vintage Cognac ever to be sold at auction. A bottle of Gautier Cognac 1762 - one of the world’s oldest surviving cognacs and the oldest vintage Cognac ever to be sold at auction - sells for £118,580. Only three such bottles from the 1762 vintage with the original labels still attached survive to this day. The bottle just sold is known as the trio's "Grand Frere" or "Big Brother" as it is the largest. The Gautier Museum currently houses "Little Sister" while "Little Brother" was sold at auction in New York in 2014. The trio has a remarkable back story. Produced the same year that Britain entered the Seven Years' War against Spain and Naples and Catherine the Great became empress of Russia, it has been held by the same family since the end of the 19th century. According to the now-former owner of the bottle, his great-grandparents fostered an orphan named Alphonse, who left in 1870 to work in the Cognac region. He returned to his adoptive parents' home 10 years later with a cart loaded with Cognac bottles. It is thought that Alphonse left the Cognac region after the vines were decimated by the phylloxera crisis which crippled wine and brandy producers at the time and that the bottle was given to him in lieu of wages. Alphonse was sent to war in 1914 and never returned but his family carefully preserved his treasure in their cellars. "The Gauthier 1762 is renowned and revered across the world as a Cognac that transcends the world of spirits collecting," Jonny Fowle, Sotheby's Spirits specialist said in a statement. "This bottle represents not only an example of pre-phylloxera viticulture, but also of early cask maturation from the dawn of Gautier's production and even precedes the French Revolution. This bottle contains not only a superb brandy, but also Cognac's history," he added. The bottle had been estimated at between £80,000-£160,000 (€88,800-€177,600). The winning bidder will also enjoy a bespoke experience at Maison Gautier, courtesy of the distillery.

  12. The US has imposed travel restrictions on foreign nationals who have been to Brazil in the last 14 days. The South American nation recently became the world's second major hotspot for coronavirus cases. Brazil currently has more than 347,300 confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University data. A White House spokeswoman said the restrictions would help ensure new cases are not brought into the US. "Today's action will help ensure foreign nationals who have been in Brazil do not become a source of additional infections in our country," White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement. Non-Americans who have been in Brazil in the two weeks before they request entry to the US will be denied that entry. The restriction will not affect trade between the two countries. The suspension is to take effect on May 28 at 11:59 PM EDT (03:59 AM GMT). The travel ban will not apply to US citizens, or to the spouse, parent, legal guardian, or child of a US citizen or lawful permanent resident, and most siblings under the age of 21. "The potential for undetected transmission of the virus by infected individuals seeking to enter the United States from [Brazil] threatens the security of our transportation system and infrastructure and the national security," said the suspension order published by the White House on Sunday. Earlier on Sunday, White House National security adviser Robert O'Brien told CBS "Face the Nation" that travel restriction for Brazil were expected shortly. "We hope that'll be temporary, but because of the situation in Brazil, we're going to take every step necessary to protect the American people," Mr O'Brien said. He added that "we'll take a look at the other countries on a country-by-country basis for sure". US President Donald Trump suggested earlier this week that he was considering imposing a ban on travel from Brazil. The US currently leads the world in coronavirus cases. It has over 1.6 million known cases and is nearing 100,000 deaths linked to the virus. Other US travel restrictions Sunday's announcement is the latest travel restriction imposed by the US in a bid to combat the spread of the virus. Foreign nationals who have recently visited China, Iran, the European Schengen area, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland are already barred from entry to the US. Canada and the US also recently agreed to extend the closure of their shared border to non-essential travel. What is the situation across Brazil? Brazil recently overtook Russia with regards to known cases of the virus. President Jair Bolsonaro has repeatedly dismissed the risks posed by the virus. The number of deaths in Brazil has been doubling roughly every two weeks, compared to about every two months in the UK, four months in France, and five months in Italy. Expert have warned that the real figure may be far higher due to a lack of testing.

  15. For Sudeep Choudhury, work on merchant ships promised adventure and a better life. But a voyage on an oil tanker in West Africa, in dangerous seas far from home, would turn the young graduate's life upside down. His fate would come to depend on a band of drug-fuelled jungle pirates - and the whims of a mysterious figure called The King. The MT Apecus dropped anchor off Nigeria's Bonny Island shortly after sunrise. Sudeep Choudhury was at the end of a draining shift on deck. Looking towards land, he could make out dozens of other ships. On the shoreline beyond them, a column of white oil storage tanks rose out of the ground like giants. He had breakfast and then made two phone calls. One to his parents - he knew they worried about him, their only child - and one to his fiancee, Bhagyashree. He told her that everything was going to plan and that he would call her again later that day. He then clambered into bed for a sleep. It was 19 April, 2019. The small, ageing oil tanker and its crew of 15 had spent two days sailing south from the port of Lagos to the Niger Delta, where oil was discovered in the 1950s by Dutch and British businessmen seeking a swift fortune. Although he knew that vicious pirates roamed the labyrinthine wetlands and mangroves of the delta, Sudeep felt safe that tropical South Atlantic morning. Nigerian navy boats were patrolling and the Apecus was moored just outside Bonny, seven nautical miles from land, waiting for permission to enter port. The warm waters of the Gulf of Guinea, which lap across the coastline of seven West African nations, are the most dangerous in the world. It used to be Somalia, but now this area is the epicentre of modern sea piracy. Of all the seafarers held for ransom globally last year, some 90% were taken here. Sixty-four people were seized from six ships in just the last three months of 2019, according to the International Maritime Bureau, which tracks such incidents. Many more attacks may have gone unreported. The bountiful oil found here could have made the people of the delta rich, but for most it has been a curse. Spills have poisoned the water and the land, and a fight over the spoils of the industry has fuelled violent crime and conflict for decades. In the villages above the pipelines that have netted billions for the Nigerian government and international oil companies, life expectancy is about 45 years. Militant groups with comic book names like the Niger Delta Avengers have blown up pipelines and crippled production to demand the redistribution of wealth and resources. Oil thieves siphon off thick black crude and process it in makeshift refineries hidden in the forest. The level of violence in the delta ebbs and flows - but the threat is always there.
  16. A man has died after a water buffalo attacked three people at a commercial property. The 57-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, after police officers were called to the address at Gwehelog, near Usk, Monmouthshire. A man, 19, was also critically injured and taken to Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales by air ambulance. A woman, 22, suffered a serious leg injury and is being treated at Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital. Gwent Police said they were called to the property at about 14:50 BST on Tuesday and received support from the National Police Air Service. The water buffalo has been destroyed. A neighbour said the herd were a familiar sight on the farm and were often seen in the fields with the horses. They added the buffalo always appeared to be quite quiet, and that the owners had been seen stroking them.
