Although we’re big fans of the Dacia Duster here at TopGear.com, there’s a slight feeling of unease surrounding this all-new third generation. Why? Well, it looks a bit… too good, bluntly. A bit plush. A little too much equipment and swagger for what is supposed to be a cheap, no-nonsense, working hero. But before we do the usual and jump headlong to conclusions, it’s probably worth a little delve into what we’re looking at.
For a start, this is a properly new Duster. It’s based on the Renault/Nissan CMF-B platform (common module family) that underpins the Jogger and new Sandero as well as the Clio and forthcoming Renault 5, so bang up to date on that front. It’s an architecture that’ll take a variety of drivetrains (including full EV), but the new Duster is going hybrid-ish and techy from the start. So there’ll be three drivetrains on offer, as well as front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. Already, we raise our collective eyebrow. But bear with us.
There’s the Hybrid 140, which comprises a 1.6-litre, 94bhp petrol engine with a 49bhp electric motor - plus a big starter-generator. It’s a clutchless auto, has re-gen braking and a little 1.2kWh battery - so not much all-electric range - but it is properly efficient if driven sympathetically. Then there’s the TCe 130 mild-hybrid, which gets a three-cylinder, 1.2-litre turbocharged motor with a 48-volt electric bit bolted to it to support. It’s only got a 0.9kWh battery, so no electric range, but the electric bit helps the combustion motor when starting and accelerating - so it’s a bit more responsive - and 10 per cent more efficient than the equivalent power ICE. That one comes with a six-speed manual in either front or 4x4 versions.
Lastly there’s the Duster TCe 100 Bi-fuel, and that does what it says on the tin. It’s a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo that can run on either one of its two 50-litre tanks of either LPG or petrol. You can only have it as front-wheel drive - the LPG tank is under the boot floor where the 4x4 bits would go - but it gives you 10 per cent less CO2 than a straight petrol, and a possible 1,300km - that’s over 800-miles - of range. Best for those that live near a convenient LPG outlet though.

Luke Donald will remain Europe's Ryder Cup captain for the 2025 edition in New York after leading his team to victory in Rome in October.
Donald has been victorious in all four of his appearances as a player and one as captain, guiding Europe to a 16½-11½ win over the United States.
He will become the first Europe captain to serve consecutive terms since Bernard Gallacher between 1991-1995.
"I'm delighted and honoured to lead Team Europe again," Donald said.
"Great opportunities don't come along very often in life and I'm a great believer that when they do, you need to grab them with both hands. This is one of these moments."
Having been appointed captain in August 2022 as a replacement for the ousted Henrik Stenson following the Swede's move to LIV Golf, Donald helped his side regain the trophy and ensured Europe's unbeaten home record would stretch beyond 30 years.
Europe's Ryder Cup players chanted "two more years" at Donald during his speech at the 2023 trophy presentation.
Among his four Ryder Cup appearances as a player, Donald's successes included the the 'Miracle at Medinah' in 2012 when he secured the first singles point of Europe's remarkable comeback.
Donald had served as vice-captain in previous editions under Thomas Bjorn in 2018 and Padraig Harrington in 2021.
Following the team's success in Rome, in which they regained the trophy after a 19-9 loss in Wisconsin in 2021, Jon Rahm said Donald had "done an unbelievable job" while Tommy Fleetwood added that the players were "all so proud of him".
The next Ryder Cup will take place in September 2025 at Bethpage Black, which is set to join Oak Hill Country Club as the second New York course to host the event.
There, Donald will seek to become only the second captain to lead Europe to victories both home and away since Tony Jacklin at The Belfry, in England, in 1985 and Muirfield Village in Ohio in 1987.
Donald added: "There is no question that being a captain away from home is a tough task.
"But I have never shied away from challenges throughout my career and it is precisely the kind of thing that motivates me. I can't wait to get another 12-strong team to Bethpage in 2025."

y table is jammed with cocktail pitchers, pints of lager, trays of shots, Jägerbombs, bottles of Hooch, mince pies, pizzas, onion rings and chips. Nothing strange for a man of my epicurean calibre, you may think. (As a student, I was once caught drinking out of a puddle after putting way too much chilli sauce on my kebab.) But it’s all been paid for by people I’ve never met, out of the kindness of their hearts.
I’ve come to the John Jacques in Fratton, Portsmouth, to meet 42-year-old Chris Illman, who started Wetherspoons The Game!! on Facebook in 2018 with a handful of others. This month, membership rocketed from the low 1,000s to 400,000 after a change in the algorithm that Facebook uses to suggest groups to non-members. When the number of members reached 10,000, Illman held good on his promise to have a cloud and a spoon (weather, spoons – geddit?) tattooed on his arm. When it reaches 500,000 members, he’ll have his middle name legally changed to Spoons. Illman predicts this will happen within weeks.
The game works due to a loophole in the Wetherspoon’s app. Apps for outlets such as McDonald’s and Pizza Express use your phone’s location services to verify you physically at a location. The Spoons app, which was introduced by the pub chain in 2017, asks you to manually confirm which pub you are in, and which table you are sitting at. You can be sitting in, say, The Muckle Cross, the nearest Spoons to John O’Groats, and someone in Land’s End can order you a drink to your table through the app on their phone. Playing the game means that you would like others to pay for your food and drink. All you have to do is post your location and table number in the Facebook group, and the free booze and grub will come flying.
Why would random people pay for customers they’ve never met? “I’d say 90% of people buy something back,” says Illman, adding there’s no way he could actually police it. “When I started the group, I’d just recovered from cancer, got divorced and was sleeping in my car. I wanted something to put me in a positive mindset …” Now hundreds of people play the game every day. And unlike Fight Club, everyone is welcome to talk about it, so long as they play by the rules.
“Rule one is that you have to upload a clear picture of everyone in the group [who are hoping to be on the receiving end] so we can make sure there’s no under-18s,” says Illman. “If anyone looks under 25, we’ll ask them to privately upload ID. Rule two: No non-drinkers or allergies. We can’t be responsible for what is sent. Rule three: Everyone has to have manners and say: ‘Please’, ‘thank you’, ‘appreciated’. Any trolls get banned instantly. Rule four: No silly orders like fried eggs and bowls of peas. The kitchens will bar these anyway.” You can specify, such as “no food” or “only drinking Stella”, but generally you are at the mercy of what people would like to send you. “That’s part of the fun,” continues Illman. “Rule five: Don’t play too often. Once a week as a rule of thumb. And rule six: Responsible drinking! Post when you’ve had enough, else we’ll do it for you.”
Illman tells me that there have been marriages and babies through the group. But he’s most proud of what he’s done for charity. In 2020, the game provided £6,000 worth of food and soft drinks in Liverpool, collected by local charities and dished out to homeless people. A similar event is to be held next month, most likely in Portsmouth or Brighton. The group has featured in the Wetherspoon’s magazine. But it’s been up to Illman to sort out charity days with local managers.
The game is ultimate karma: a giant round where if someone gets yours in now, you owe someone else in the future. Karma has been in our favour this evening. Ilman had to stop the game after 17 minutes because our table was crammed, most likely due to his post that the Guardian were coming down to help celebrate the group reaching 400,000 members. (Another 1,000 members join during the couple of hours I’m sat at the table.) I help dish out what we can’t quaff and scoff to other slightly bemused customers, unsure why they are receiving free booze and grub. Do try Wetherspoons The Game!! for yourselves. But remember: if others have bought you free food and drink, then it’s your round next. And please give generously to the next charity event on 11 December.

Four Palestinians, including two children, have been killed by Israeli forces during a raid in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian officials say.
CCTV videos appeared to show eight-year-old Adam al-Ghoul and Basel Abu al-Wafa, 14, being shot during the same incident in the city of Jenin.
The Israeli military said suspects threw explosive devices at its soldiers and that they responded with live fire.
It also said troops killed "two high-ranking terrorists" during the raid.
There has been a surge in violence in the West Bank since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by Hamas's attack on southern Israel on 7 October.
Footage shows a small figure on a security camera video turning and starting to run, before falling sharply to the ground. His eight-year-old body is easily dragged from the road by a friend.
The life of Adam al-Ghoul ended in Jenin on Wednesday with a shot to the head, as Israeli forces withdrew from a military operation in the refugee camp there.
Nearby, his 14-year-old friend, Basel Abu al-Wafa was fighting for his life after being shot in the chest, with gunfire hitting the ground around him.
At Jenin Hospital, both boys were declared dead.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that during "activity in the Jenin camp, a number of suspects hurled explosive devices toward IDF soldiers".
"The soldiers responded with live fire toward the suspects and hits were identified."
As Basel's body was prepared for burial in the crowded hospital morgue, a relative watched as the teenager was wrapped in the green flag of Hamas. It wasn't what Basel would have wanted, he told the BBC.
"He's innocent, not from the militias," he said, teetering between anger and grief. "He's perfect in school, a good boy, kind."
The hospital director, Dr Wissam Bakr, said the boys' wounds - from shots to the head and chest - showed that they were intentionally killed.
"There's no safe place in Jenin now," he said.
The war in Gaza has increased tensions here in the West Bank, where there are near-nightly raids by Israel's forces.
In its operations in Jenin overnight, the IDF said it had killed a senior commander for Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Mohammed Zubeidi, and another called Wissam Hanoun who had been inside a building with him.
It accused Zubeidi of involvement in two shootings in May in which an Israeli civilian was killed and several soldiers were wounded.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad - which like Hamas is classed as a terrorist group by Israel, the UK and other Western powers - confirmed that two of its local commanders were killed.
The IDF also said it had arrested 17 wanted individuals during the raid.
Israeli missiles, grenades and explosives have left a broad scar of destruction in Jenin's camp - several houses gutted or collapsed, and large chunks of masonry hanging over mounds of rubble.
Diggers were helping search for a body still believed to be buried there.
Militant leaders were the target here, killed along with boys of eight and 14.
Before the Jenin raid, the UN said that at least 225 Palestinians, including more than 50 children, had been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank since 7 October.
Adam and Basel are the latest casualties of a conflict that keeps getting older, even as children die.

Another day, another restomod Porsche 911, though we aren’t complaining. The latest is a bespoke one-of-one 964 generation that’s been renovated by Oxfordshire-based Theon Designs. And no, it doesn’t have any association with that Greyjoy from Game of Thrones.
Currently stylised as ‘GBR002’, this 1992 Carrera 2 has been built from the ground up with the donor car being stripped back to its metal frame before being laminated with carbon fibre.
The body has then been finished in ‘Oak Green Metallic’ and coupled with dark ‘ghost’ stripes. Satin chrome brightwork and 18in Fuchs-style alloys complete the minimalist approach to exterior enhancements.
Retaining a purist mindset to speed through lightweight construction remains, with the car tipping the scales at just 1,169kg (200kg less than the original). It has been given an air-cooled, naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six, delivering 406bhp and 326lb ft of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed walking stick.

World number two Rory McIlroy has beaten Tiger Woods to the PGA Tour's $15m (£11.9m) prize for generating the most media interest in 2023.
Northern Ireland's McIlroy pipped the 15-time major winner to top spot on the tour's 'Player Impact Programme' (PIP).
Woods won it in 2021 and 2022 despite his injury-hit playing schedule.
McIlroy takes top spot for the first time two weeks after saying "something had to give" when he resigned from the tour's Policy Board.
'R&A to announce new ball rule before end of year'
The PIP, introduced in 2021, was designed to reward players who generate the most interest in the PGA Tour, with metrics such as Google searches, news article mentions and social media reach taken into account.
McIlroy, who finished second to Woods in 2022, tops the PIP list after capturing his fifth DP World Tour Race to Dubai title earlier this month. Woods earns $12m (£9.5m) for finishing second.
McIlroy, 34, was unable to defend his FedEx Cup title on the PGA Tour, however, finishing fourth behind Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark, who also denied McIlroy a fifth major title at the US Open in June.
Masters winner Jon Rahm earns $9m (£7.2m) for finishing third, with three-time major winner Jordan Spieth and world number one Scottie Scheffler rounding out the top five.
England's Tommy Fleetwood collects $5m (£4m) for finishing tied seventh alongside Hovland, Justin Thomas and Max Homa.
Next year, the Player Impact Programme's bonus pool will be $50m (£39.9m) between the top 10 players, a change from the $100m (£79.8m) that was awarded to the top 20 this year.
Woods, 47, will return to action this week after seven months out in the Hero World Challenge, an event he hosts in the Bahamas, having recovered from ankle surgery.
Woods and McIlroy are also fronting a new virtual golf competition called TGL, the start date for which was pushed back one year to early 2025, after its facility in Florida sustained serious damage after a power outage.

It is not only in Omagh that a hum is to be heard (‘It’s a bit of a mystery’: what’s causing Omagh’s hum?, 21 November). In Derby, I have been aware of a low-frequency hum for some years. It is much more noticeable at night and in winter, but only disturbing when lying in bed – probably because it could be a ground-transmitted vibration, which at its worst is on the boundary between hearing and feeling on the eardrum.
It used to be a distinctive two-tone sound, like a mechanism changing between in gear and neutral, but this has changed over the last couple of years to a single deep humming tone. Its wave form seems in some locations to hit a resonant frequency with the room, which may be why the hum is more evident in some homes than others. I find it to be just below the threshold of preventing sleep, but it may be worse for anyone with a tendency to insomnia.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin says he is going to propose a ban on small ultra-right groups, in response to a series of violent protests over the murder of a schoolboy at a village dance.
The 16-year-old, called Thomas, was fatally stabbed when fighting broke out at the dance in Crépol on 18 November.
Prosecutors say nine suspects have been placed under formal investigation.
But extreme-right activists have seized on the boy's death.
On a visit to Crépol, a village of around 500 people in the Drôme area of southeastern France. government spokesman Olivier Véran made an appeal to people "not to answer violence with violence" and warned that society was at risk of "tipping over".
Prosecutors say the circumstances surrounding the teenager's killing are unclear and have advised against jumping to hasty conclusions.
Reports say an argument inside Crépol village hall led to a brawl outside as more young people arrived at the scene in one or two cars.
Thomas, a keen rugby player, was mourned by 2,000 people and a minute's silence was held at the weekend at French rugby games.
Far-right politicians alleged a racial motive to the crime which has not been confirmed. But last weekend extremist groups took to the streets in Romans-sur-Isère, 16km (10 miles) south of Crépol, where they claimed some of the suspects lived.
Authorities said the protesters had come to commit violence against local residents and police officers.
Six young men have already been sentenced in connection with the riots, with fast-track jail terms of between six and 10 months.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Tuesday that he would propose a ban on three small ultra-right groups linked to the violence.
He added that extremist militias "seek to attack Arabs, people with different skin colours, speak of their nostalgia for the Third Reich". 13 far-right terror plots had been foiled by authorities since 2017, he said.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said politicians using the murder to "play on fears" showed a lack of respect for the victim.

WHAT IS IT?
The Renault Scenic was a massive hit with car-buying families in the 1990s, so you can see why they wanted to revive the name. But that was that and this is this. It's a long-ish wheelbase, long-range electric family car.
The original Scenic's one-box profile and its ultra-versatile interior, with three individual folding and sliding rear seats, are history. Fair enough: people gradually stopped buying those MPVs, and unused ultra-versatile seats just add weight and cost.
These days the sales (and the legal mandates) are in stuff like the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan Ariya, VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq. That's where the Scenic competes.
Renault has another family electric hatch, the Megane E-Tech Electric, but people have complained it's not roomy enough in the back. The Scenic is largely the same up front but has a 100mm longer wheelbase, devoted to the rear.
People also grumbled that the Megane's battery size isn't enough, so the Scenic comes with 87kWh as standard. That's 391 miles WLTP. Which ought to shut them up.
SO NO FAMILY-AMUSING CABIN NOVELTIES THEN?
Actually, although the seats are straightforward, there is one. If there are only two people in the back, they can drop the centre armrest. That has two USB sockets, and trays for this 'n' that, and cupholders. Pivoting brackets around the cupholders act as little arms to grip and hold upright tablets and phones. They can be set either across the car so both people can watch the same screen, or at 45 degrees so each can see their own.
That armrest opens up more to turn into a ski hatch. There are more USBs for when the centre seat is occupied. In all the Scenic has six sockets and a wireless charging pad.
The top-spec has Solarbay, a glass roof that can be rendered opaque by LCD switching, with separate LCD sections for front and rear. Less weight than a blind, and more rear headroom.
Oh and Jean-Michelle Jarre composed the pedestrian warning noise and the Scenic’s other beep-beep-boops.
HOW IS IT TO DRIVE?
Very good. The suspension is taut and the steering quick. It's well-balanced and lively in bends. It's very light for a long-range EV – 1,850kg, and that shows in its sense of fleet-footedness. Yet it doesn't feel flimsy.
Performance is easily strong enough for most people: the lead engineer remembered the R5 GT Turbo he drove in his 20s. This is a match for acceleration.
Renault's excellent driver interface helps. You get physical buttons for the most urgent functions, and a big customisable centre screen too.
HOW IS IT TO RIDE IN? IT'S A FAMILY CAR AFTER ALL.
It's fine. Adult-size people in the back have all the room they need, so they can enjoy their screens. It'll do three abreast, and the flat floor means the central bod has foot space. Headroom's not a problem either. You get useful storage in the cabin, and the boot's fine.
It's quiet over the road and through the air. The ride is firmish – think Kia EV6 rather than Hyundai Ioniq 5 – but it's well damped. Which will likely reduce the need for sickbags out back.
WHAT ARE THE ELECTRIC STATS?
Here in Britain an 87kWh battery is standard, for a range of 391 miles WLTP. Renault is honest enough to say this means 231 miles at French motorway speed, an average of 72mph. And that's exactly what we got – 116 miles for 50 per cent discharge – on French motorways and open-country, quick roads driven at eight degrees Celsius. And we were paying precisely zero attention to energy economy.
So it's going to be about 260 on UK motorways and more than that on slower roads. Unless you've a headwind, driving rain or it's really cold. And actually a heat pump and battery heater are standard in the UK, so low-temp range should hold up pretty well. Finally, battery chemistry is different from the Megane's, and is able to deliver more of its rated energy down to colder temperatures.
Rapid charging is good too: it's not about a headline-grabbing power spike, but a consistent rate as the battery fills. It has online charge planning and will precondition on approach to the charger and then can average 110kW over 30 minutes starting from 20 per cent, so you've added 50kWh in that time.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?
“The Scenic is good-looking on the outside and well-finished within, and in most ways it's a very sweet drive”
It's likeable. Lots of rational reasons why: space, efficiency and lightness count in its favour. But it's also good-looking on the outside and well-finished within, and in most ways it's a very sweet drive.
We almost wish it wasn't called Scenic. It's a name that has long since evaporated from public consciousness in Britain, and in any case this isn't a Scenic. But it is a very good car.

High praise indeed from Gary Neville, but deservedly so as Alejandro Garnacho scored one of the great Premier League goals in Manchester United's 3-0 win at Everton.
The 19-year-old Argentina winger met Diogo Dalot's cross in the third minute at Goodison Park from about 15 yards out and unleashed a stunning overhead kick into the top corner.
"I can't believe it to be honest," he said afterwards. "I didn't see how I scored, I just listened to the crowd and said 'oh my God'."

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman, summarising on BBC Radio 5 Live, said: "It was a jaw-dropping moment. Everybody was just stunned by seeing a goal of that quality.
"It wasn't just the finish which was remarkable but the whole move, back to front, cross-field pass, good touch, underlapping run, cross to the far post then that moment."
Ex-United captain Neville, on Sky Sports, added: "That is a magical, magical goal. We will see that a few times this season. That is one of the best you will ever see.
"I can't believe it. I don't think it can get any better in his career in terms of a goal. Absolutely spectacular, a world-class moment.
"I've never seen an overhead kick goal as good as that. He has to step metres away from goal, shuffles his feet and lift himself into the air. I've never seen a goal like it."
Spare a thought for Michael Olise.
On Saturday, the Crystal Palace winger scored a fantastic goal against Luton Town, running down the right wing, cutting in and curling a stunner into the far corner.
"It's got to be up there," said Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on Match of the Day as they discussed whether it would be goal of the season.
"It will take some beating," added Lineker.
That beating would happen about 22 hours later and unfortunately for Olise, his strike is not even goal of the final weekend of November.
United boss Erik ten Hag told BBC Sport: "The finish was incredible, it was world class. We are early in the season but already it's the goal of the season."
However his manager says Garnacho has some way to go to be the finished article.
"It's not the first time we saw this, we have already often seen glimpses, but if you want to be a player like Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo you have to score 20 to 25 goals in the Premier League each season," he said.
"That's not easy to get, you have to work hard, you have to go in areas where it hurts. So there's a lot to come. But he has potential."
Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes called it "superb". "It was something amazing and I have no words to describe it. It is out of this world. Special from a special kid," he continued.
John Murray, who has been a BBC Radio 5 Live commentator since 1997, said: "Memories there of some of the great goals that we've seen scored.
"I'm thinking Mark Hughes, I'm thinking Wayne Rooney, the famous goal that he scored in the Manchester derby, that was right up there with that.
"It was acrobatic, spectacular, I think it's one of the best goals I've seen live."
