  1. Cristian Intriago, 25, leads a project to conserve and monitor the nests of the world's longest-living reptiles in Puerto Cabuyal, Ecuador. Four of the five species that transit Latin America arrive in the country, most at risk of extinction. The first time that Cristian Intriago, 25, saw a turtle, he found it on the shore of his beach bitten by a dog. He was barely 10 years old but he perfectly remembers the feeling it generated in him. “It was huge and beautiful, but they had left it horrible… I felt anger. I needed to know more about her”, he now tells in Puerto Cabuyal, in the coastal Ecuadorian province of Manabí. After seeing her wounded, others arrived who had been caught in trawl nets and thrown overboard. Threats are a constant in the life of these reptiles. "And now, on top of everything, climate change is coming and making everything even more difficult," he laments. "I'm afraid I'll stop seeing turtles on my beach when I'm old." That boy's anger turned to interest. In the free school where he studied, he discussed the situation he had lived through and his desire to learn more about “these little animals” for whom survival is a huge challenge. According to experts, only one out of every thousand specimens that manage to hatch survive to adulthood, since their journey from the shell to the shore is a real adventure threatened by various predators. The tutors listened to his concerns and began to investigate together with the students. “I learned fascinating things, I was very struck by how the grades defined his life from him so much. I became obsessed with them”, acknowledges the young man. Three years ago, they founded a group for the study, monitoring and protection of turtles and eggs, called Carapazón de Ninos. Now he is the one who teaches classes at his old school of him. “I'll tell you what I know about olive ridleys, tortoiseshells or greens… These guys are the future. If they're aware that we have a lot of power to change things, they still won't go extinct,” he says. Although he sounds convinced of it, the look of concern does not leave his face from him. The change in temperature complicates everything: from the food they find to the danger of running out of a beach where to nest due to the rise in sea level and the very definition of their sex. The sand in which the turtles lay their eggs acts as an incubator during the 60 days that the process usually lasts. From the 20th to the 40th day, these eggs become thermosensitive and any climatic fluctuation will tip the balance towards one sex or the other. The colder, the more evils will come out. And with warmer temperatures, more females. The ideal would be 29 degrees. This pivotal temperature would allow a balance of almost 50 and 50, with some majority of females; an optimal scenario considering that males mate with several females and these give birth approximately every three years. Excessive heat would cause the eggs to cook or an excess of females, as is happening in other areas such as Mexico and Central America. In the case of Ecuador, climate change has resulted in very cold spells, rains and strong winds that have caused the turtles to take longer to nest and the fear of the environmental authorities that the litter will leave with hardly any females. “Last year, at this point we already had nine nests, with about 100 eggs each. Now we only have two registered. Most likely, 90% of those born, which will be about ten, will be male. This not only makes mating difficult. The female turtles lay their eggs on the same shore where they hatched, some 25 years later. “If females are not born here, they will stop arriving. We will stop seeing them”, says Intriago worried. Scientific evidence seems to predict this trend, although it is too early to be certain. Shaleyla Kelez, lead biologist for WWF Peru's Wildlife program, is cautious. “It still takes time to be clear, but it is undeniable that these thermal changes are going to have consequences,” she narrates by video call. “Relying on the historical resilience of turtles is not enough. Also, keep in mind that they are 'umbrella animals'. When you take care of them and their ecosystems, you are taking care of many other species as well. They are key in the food chain.” https://elpais.com/america-futura/2022-07-28/me-da-miedo-dejar-de-ver-tortugas-en-mi-playa-cuando-sea-viejito.html
  2. For 17 years, Ana Duran worked full time as a travel agent. Late last year she lost that job, shortly before seeing the price of eggs rise to $7.99 a dozen and the price of a single avocado rise to $2.99 at her local store. In June, filling up the gas tank cost him $94, up from $50 last year. Duran receives unemployment benefits and works part-time as a caretaker for a resident in a nursing home. To make ends meet, she has also been selling her own gold jewelry and collecting aluminum cans to recycle for extra money. He is one of many people doing what they can to get ahead in Riverside, California, which is part of the region known as the Inland Empire, where an annual inflation rate of 9.4% was recorded in May, one of the lowest high in the country. The average rate of inflation across all urban areas in the US, as measured by the Department of Labor's consumer price index, it was 8.6% in May. One of the key factors contributing to higher inflation in the Inland Empire is po[CENSORED]tion growth during the pandemic. People moved from the big cities to relatively more affordable neighboring counties like Riverside and San Bernardino. This stimulated demand for goods and services in a region where supply has not caught up. In California, where the average price of gasoline was already the highest in the country, the dramatic increase in the price of food and fuel in the area has caused residents like Duran, along with organizations trying to help residents like her, find new ways to make ends meet. Although the price of gasoline has dropped slightly in the past month, the average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline in Riverside on July 25 was still more than $5.60, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). its acronym in English). The cost of food and gasoline has forced her to cut back. Gone are the trips to the mall to stroll or cool off. Runs errands over the phone, whenever possible, instead of going to a store or another location. https://cnnespanol.cnn.com/2022/07/28/california-peores-niveles-inflacion-trax/

  5. The Historical Pact officially filed a constitutional reform with which it seeks to change the sessions of the Colombian Congress and adjust the salaries of parliamentarians, among other issues. The initiative was presented by Roy Barreras, Iván Cepeda and Gustavo Bolívar, and the representative of the Green Party, Catherine Juvinao. The reform modifies the sessions of Congress, adjusts the salary of senators and representatives, and strengthens the grounds for losing investiture. Roy Barreras, president of the Senate, indicated that this is a draft legislative act, that is, it must have eight debates to be approved. "With this, a more efficient and transparent Congress is sought to achieve the reforms that the country needs," said the official. The initiative that modifies the Constitution sti[CENSORED]tes, initially, limiting the indefinite reelection of congressmen, establishing a term limit of three terms. With this measure, a gradual renovation of the Congress is intended, giving rise to the emergence of new leaderships and putting an end to the “screwed-up” congressmen. Second, the legislative recess period of Congress will be shortened, in order to extend the semester of sessions that make up each legislature. Thus, the first session would begin on July 20 and end on December 20, and the second would run from February 1 to June 20. "The current prolonged recess lacks technical and political justifications, being one of the main demands of citizens who see the gap between congressmen and ordinary citizens as unfair," the authors said. https://www.valoraanalitik.com/2022/07/27/radican-reforma-cambiar-periodos-congreso-colombia/
  6. The list of animals in danger of extinction grows every year without exception, reminding us of the deadly effects of the human footprint on Earth. However, this year also brought good news: there are more tigers in the wild than previously believed. The new figures of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN, for its acronym in English) reveal that there are currently between 3,726 and 5,578 in the wild, which implies an increase of 40% compared to the previous count dating from 2015. UCN claims that the change is the result of an improvement in monitoring actions, but adds another encouraging fact: the number of tigers worldwide appears to be stable or increasing. "Recovery (of the species) is possible as long as conservation efforts continue," the organization says, warning that tigers are still considered an "endangered" species in their categorization. The threats to these spectacular animals are well known: poaching of tigers and their prey and habitat destruction as a result of agricultural activity and human settlement. Tigers, in fact, can live in very diverse habitats that include savannahs, tropical forests, grasslands and even mangroves. according to WWF. And yet, 93% of the area they have historically occupied disappeared precisely because of human action. The way to save them, that the conservation organization reminds, does not need new tools either. It mainly involves increasing protected areas and connecting them with each other to the best of their ability and ensuring that they are managed effectively. https://cnnespanol.cnn.com/2022/07/22/tigres-extincion-aumento-iucn-orix/
  7. After several episodes of intense heat and two heat waves, the temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea have reached anomalous and worrying figures for meteorologists, who predict that they could reach 30ºC. Thus, these episodes culminate in a drastic change dragged by humidity or "the factory of water vapor", according to the meteorologist Mario Picazo, which translates into "heat and embarrassment". And so it has been, the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has already activated a warning for heavy rains in the south of Catalonia and the areas of the Catalan coast and Pyrenees for this Wednesday. But, the warning has been perpetuated and the prediction has been extended in a large part of Catalonia until this Friday. https://www.elperiodico.com/es/tiempo/20220728/gran-parte-catalunya-aviso-lluvias-intensas-14177656

  10. Anecdotal until 2021, in an enigma still to be deciphered, this species has laid eggs this year in bucolic parks, yes, but also in apparently inhospitable ponds The causes are still nebulous. There are several hypotheses. What is indisputable is that the wild duck (although he is dressed in black tie, with his beautiful green neck edged with a white choker, is more savage than it is possible to suppose at first, as it will be revealed at the end of the chronicle in some paragraphs not suitable for all audiences) has discovered Barcelona as a home in which to settle and nest. This is a biological surprise whose scope is yet to be pondered, but before 2022 the laying of eggs by female mallards or mallards ('Anas platyrhynchos'') was only occasionally observable in a few city parks , such as those of Ciutadella, Palau Reial and Diagonal Mar, generously proportioned gardens and, above all, with hidden corners of wonderful vegetation to incubate. This year, however, is never seen before. It has even bred this species in the apparently inadequate pond in the Baix Guinardó gardens, indiscreet as a 'peep-show', and it is not an isolated case. What happened in that park, formerly known as the Jardins Príncep de Girona and, before that, as the Girona Cavalry Military Barracks, has been, for the residents, a source of daily entertainment. Two months ago the chicks, initially 11, took their first swims after breaking the shell and, after those eight weeks, the most robust have already taken flight. The neighbors have had a good time, without a doubt, but for that network of municipal employees who watch over the naturalization of the city, what happened there, unexpectedly, has been a surprise test that has put their reflexes to the test. It is said that they have approved with a note. The pond in that park is just a cement rectangle with half a meter of water. There are no reedbeds, water lilies or bucolic cobbled corners like the ones that Rubió Tudurí liked to recreate in his gardens. It is of an almost boring simplicity, the pond equivalent of the bohiguianas hard squares. The only element that breaks the geometry of this false lake are four pits that protrude above the water level and in which many other trees are planted. One of those tiny pits was enough for the mother of the chicks to lay her eggs and let life make its way. The point is that the management of the city's parks is no longer, as it was years ago, an exclusive task of the Municipal Institute of Parks and Gardens, of pruning, planting and cleaning weeds. Now it is a collective work in which biologists such as Octavi Borruel participate, with the enviable mission of maintaining biodiversity in the city's naturalized ponds, and also the technicians of the Barcelona Animal Protection Office, whose task is, metaphorically, separate the wheat from the weeds, that is, preserve wildlife when it is compatible with urban life and, on the contrary, remove and send farm animals (domestic ducks, rabbits, Florida tortoises...) to a suitable place. that there are still those who let loose in the urban green areas when at home that animal, because it has grown, is already annoying. https://www.elperiodico.com/es/barcelona/20220716/patos-salvajes-descubren-barcelona-anidar-14082608
  11. With the intention that Diego would choose one of the two, the coaches were measured in a dance battle, as this was the requirement of the talented boy. The magic of the children in La Voz Kids never stops surprising those who are connected with the Blind Auditions, in which it is not only possible to hear their great voice, but also to learn a little about their life stories and that captivating personality that makes them so unique. Chapter by chapter, Colombians have been amazed by everything these participants have to show, who with their innocence and tenderness express all the dreams they have of being part of this Diamond, which many have wanted to reach for a long time. That is why Diego, at the age of 8, could not contain his emotions and tears after his performance of 'La Mochila Azul', by Bulmaro Bermúdez, with which he got Kany García and Nacho to turn their chairs, since Cepeda was blocked by the Venezuelan Colombo. In the middle of his talk with the coaches, who tried to convince him at any cost, this native of Barranquilla confessed that the song was quite special to him since it reminded him of a girl he loved very much and whom he met during some classes of skating. Likewise, another of the sweet requirements of this little boy was that they help him perfect his techniques on the piano. However, he showed all his feelings by revealing that he had dreamed of this moment since he was only 4 years old, so the two coaches decided to go stand next to him. Once the tears were over, Diego said that he was going to make his decision based on the one who best danced like a marimonda, something that confused both Kany García and Nacho a little, so this Barranquillan explained to them about his relationship with the Carnival from Barranquilla. To the sound of drums and with their hands above their heads, these coaches set about showing their best steps and thus making it clear to Diego that they were his best option. After seeing them, this little boy made the decision to join Team Nacho. Amid laughter and fun, Cepeda stated that his partner's dance had no comparison, to which the Puerto Rican stressed that she gave everything. https://www.caracoltv.com/la-voz-kids-2022/lo-dieron-todo-kany-garcia-y-nacho-tuvieron-que-bailar-como-marimondas-en-la-voz-kids-pr30
