Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says the club are "better" with Marcus Rashford after the striker suggested he could leave Old Trafford. The England international, 27, said on Tuesday that he was "ready for a new challenge and the next steps" in his career. It came two days after Rashford was dropped for United's derby win against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium. Rashford's last Premier League start came in a 4-0 win against Everton on 1 December, when he scored twice. Amorim suggested the club want the striker - who came through United's youth ranks - to stay, saying: "I don't talk about the future, we talk about the present. "We are better with Marcus Rashford. This kind of club needs big talents - and he is a big talent." Asked about Rashford's desire for a "new challenge", Amorim said: "He is right. We have here a new challenge, the biggest in football, we are in a difficult situation. I hope all my players are ready." United face Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Thursday. Amorim refused to confirm whether Rashford or Alejandro Garnacho - who was also left out of the squad to face City - would feature against Spurs. "We have one more training session and they are in the same situation as the other players," said Amorim. "If they train well we have to make a choice." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c627wvd9vwvo

Doha - Morocco’s Lycée d’Excellence de Benguérir (Lydex) has secured the fourth position among institutions preparing students for France’s prestigious École Polytechnique (X), according to a new ranking published by French magazine L’Etudiant on Tuesday. The Moroccan institution follows closely behind Paris’s Henri-IV, which ranks third, while Louis-le-Grand and Sainte-Geneviève occupy the first and second positions respectively in the Mathematics-Physics (MP) stream rankings. According to L’Etudiant’s report, 7% of students admitted to École Polytechnique between 2020 and 2024 came from Lydex, which is “generally reserved for the most brilliant students in the country.” This achievement builds on a consistent track record of success. In 2022, Lydex had 24 students qualify for Polytechnique’s entrance exams, including six female students - making it the only Moroccan institution to place women in the oral examination phase that year. In 2023, the institution set a record with 20 students gaining admission to Polytechnique, representing one-third of places allocated to international students. The success of Lydex, founded in 2015 in Ben Guerir’s Mohammed VI Green City, reflects a broader pattern of Moroccan academic excellence in France. Campus France’s 2024 report indicates that Moroccan students constitute the largest foreign student community in France, with 45,162 students enrolled during the 2022-2023 academic year. Notably, Morocco leads in engineering school enrollments with 6,110 students, marking a 26% increase between 2017 and 2022. Rémi Chautard, a French mathematics professor, highlighted the high standards of Moroccan mathematics education in a recent assessment. “We couldn’t give this to our French students; it wouldn’t even be conceivable,” he told Le Figaro, referring to Morocco’s 2024 baccalaureate mathematics examination. He noted that some concepts in the Moroccan exam aren’t even covered in French terminal year programs. Lydex’s success is attributed to its rigorous academic program and comprehensive support system. “Students receive not only high-level training with dedicated Moroccan teachers from national education but are also coached to develop communication skills and gain confidence in oral presentations,” explained Ahmed Benzzi, Lydex’s director, in August 2023. The institution holds social inclusion as paramount, with 90% of students receiving full scholarships. Additional financial support is provided to students from disadvantaged backgrounds for supplementary expenses. The residential campus model includes sports activities to help students manage the intensive study program’s demands. Historical data shows consistent performance: in 2019, 11 out of 15 Lydex candidates successfully passed Polytechnique’s oral examinations, followed by 17 out of 21 in 2020, and 11 out of 25 in 2021. Earlier this year, in February, L’Etudiant magazine had ranked Lydex second in the MP stream rankings, with approximately 16% of its graduates accessing École Polytechnique, before dropping to its current fourth position in the magazine’s latest December rankings. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2024/12/367051/moroccan-institution-ranks-4th-among-top-preparatory-schools-for-elite-ecole-polytechnique

Rabat – Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has described the dissolution of the European Parliament’s “Western Sahara Intergroup” in 2024 as a significant diplomatic development in countering pro-Polisario narratives. Bourita made his remarks this week during a press conference during an official visit made by Zambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe. Active for two decades, the intergroup failed to secure sufficient support from parliamentary factions following recent European elections. Bourita said that the group had been widely criticized for violating parliamentary rules and serving as a platform for Algerian-backed separatist propaganda, reflecting a shift in European positions toward a more balanced approach on the Sahara issue. Reports said the intergroup – which was used to bring together pro-Polisario MEPs – has not been reconstituted, reflecting a significant blow and setback for the Algerian regime. On Tuesday, Moroccan news outlet Le360 quoted a well informed source, who said that the refusal to support the intergroup represents a “strong political signal to Algeria from the European parliament.” The intergroup made similar hostile acts violating EU principled policies, including the misuse of EU Parliament's logo during its meetings. The recent decision to end the intergroup may serve as a glimpse of hope for Morocco, signaling a potential shift toward reducing external interference in its domestic affairs. For years, the European Parliament has been at the center of controversy, particularly over its increasingly hostile resolutions targeting Morocco’s domestic policies; including its position on Western Sahara and attempts to undermine the country's territorial integrity. The diplomatic crisis reached its peak last year; as several resolutions and actions by the European Parliament challenged Morocco’s position. However, the decision to end the intergroup adds to Morocco’s diplomatic gains, with a growing list of countries supporting its position, backing the country’s Autonomy Plan as the only and most credible solution able to end the lingering dispute. During his press conference with his Zambian counterpart, Bourita recalled the support Morocco has been earning from the international community, citing France’s backing of the country’s sovereignty. He also recalled the support Morocco received from other European countries, including Slovenia, Finland, Denmark and Estonia, which joined over 20 EU countries backing the Autonomy Plan. More than 113 countries now support the initiative, he said, noting the ongoing withdrawal of recognition for the self-styled Polisario Front’s SADR. He recalled that Ecuador and Panama are the latest countries to suspend recognition in October and November, respectively. “Today only 28 countries continue to recognize this fictitious entity,” Bourita said, noting that nearly 50 countries revoked recognition over the past two decades. Bourita also recalled the momentum of consulate openings in Laayoune and Dakhla, which now host diplomatic missions representing nearly 40% of African Union member states. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2024/12/366997/end-of-western-sahara-intergroup-marks-shift-in-european-parliament

Empires fall and Manchester City's collapse has been sudden. Fourteen unbeaten. Seven without a win. But while the decline of Pep Guardiola's team has been sharp, it is also the product of poor planning and a series of underwhelming signings. It already seems clear that Rodri's serious knee injury will come to define City's season and a player of that calibre - the winner of the Ballon d'Or no less - would always be missed. But there was no need for his absence to completely derail their campaign. It is a consequence of the squad that has been constructed, one about which Guardiola can claim the need to substitute Ilkay Gundogan when three goals up against Feyenoord because he is the only holding midfielder on the books who is available. That Gundogan, 34, is really a holding midfielder at all is up for debate. A deep-lying playmaker, perhaps, but one who was torn between pointing and chasing when James Maddison ran away from his ageing legs in that chastening 4-0 defeat to Tottenham. In isolation, the decision to bring back such a po[CENSORED]r player might be explained away as a no-brainer. And yet, it is revealing that this fading force is required to fill such a gaping hole in the squad. Rodri has no equal but was a similar profile really impossible? Mateo Kovacic, 30 himself and another signing that felt like a short-term fix rather than a rebuild, is similarly unable to stop the counter-attacks that are killing City's title hopes. The absence of a defensive-minded midfielder has left them alarmingly vulnerable. The number of fast breaks leading to a shot on their goal is higher than ever before in Guardiola's reign. The failure to control those counters is undermining their possession game, those passages of play too likely to end in a chance for their opponent instead. It is not as if the consequences of Rodri's injury should have been a shock to the club. Four of their five defeats last season came in the nine games that he missed. And it is not as if Rodri is the only player of outsized importance in an imbalanced squad. The decision to let Julian Alvarez leave for Atletico Madrid in the summer leaves them without an obvious replacement for Erling Haaland. The Argentinian scored seven goals during the period in which Haaland was injured last winter. Who would do that now? Some of these recruitment calls, the increasingly misjudged sale of Cole Palmer included, can be put down to the demands of profit and sustainability rules. But there would be sympathy for that argument had money not been spent freely in other areas. City paid £53m to bring in Matheus Nunes from Wolves late last summer, a sizeable fee for a player who has started only 11 Premier League games since. Even now, Guardiola does not feel able to play him in a central role, which raises questions about the signing. Against Liverpool, Nunes was used on the left wing - perhaps the one position on the pitch where City look overly stocked. Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku and Savinho - three players who might consider that their best position - were among the substitutes. Grealish, signed for £100m of course, can at least point to the role that he played in the club's treble-winning season. But the fact that City have dipped into the market for wingers time and again since then suggests he has been no more than a qualified success. The complaint has long been that Grealish does not contribute enough goals. He has not scored for the club in any competition in 2024. But that seems to be a trend among the wingers that have been stockpiled. Savinho is still yet to score a goal in a City shirt. If this is a stylistic trait, a result of the role foisted on City's wide players, obliged to hug the touchline, stretch the play to create space, it did not stop Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez when they played there. That was when the goals were shared around. Remarkably, Mahrez scored more goals in his final season with City than Grealish has mustered in his three-and-a-half. Two goals between Grealish, Savinho and Doku represents a paltry return this season, exacerbating the reliance on Erling Haaland. At least the decision to move on from Mahrez and Sterling suggested some willingness to overhaul an ageing squad. Doku and Savinho's best years are ahead of them. But how far ahead? It is a problem when others have been allowed to grow old in City blue. Gundogan's presence in midfield alongside Kevin De Bruyne, 33, and Bernardo Silva, now 30, might explain why pace on the pitch is such an issue now. Kyle Walker, always so reliant on his speed, faces similar challenges in defence. Even John Stones is now 30. There is an old adage that the core of a group is ideally in its mid-to-late twenties. There are only three players in City's entire squad aged between 25 and 28 - Nunes, Rodri and Ruben Dias. They are the only team to give the majority of minutes to players who are 29 or over. Again, that issue is most pronounced in midfield, a demanding position both physically and tactically. Rico Lewis, just 20, could well develop into a high-class player but it is debatable whether he is there yet. He is not supplying the progressive passes required. Lewis' growth will take time. It cannot be rushed, just as the decline of others cannot be halted. Guardiola will work to correct and cover these failings but it takes time and transfer windows to solve. Gradually, then suddenly, City's flaws have been exposed. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/37587/13265943/man-citys-premier-league-title-defence-collapsing-due-to-pep-guardiolas-poor-recruitment

Rabat - Moroccan phosphate giant, OCP Group, is planning to issue bonds worth 5 MAD billion from December 10 to 12 this year. The Moroccan Capital Market Authority (AMMC) released a press release on Tuesday announcing the prospectus for OCP’s upcoming bond issuance. This move is part of OCP’s investment program aimed at expanding its operations and boosting development. The subscription will be limited to qualified Moroccan investors. The bond issuance will be managed by CDG Capital and BMCE Capital Conseil, who have been appointed as financial advisors and global coordinators. According to AMMC, the bond issuance will include five non-listed tranches. Tranches A and B will have a maturity of 10 years, while tranches C, D, and E will have maturities of 15, 20, and 30 years, respectively. The interest rate for Tranche A will be adjustable annually, while the rates for Tranches B, C, D, and E will remain fixed. This bond issuance is part of OCP’s broader investment strategy, supporting the company’s ongoing projects and growth plans. By offering diverse maturity options, OCP aims to attract qualified Moroccan investors interested in long-term financial opportunities. The fundraising comes as OCP Group continues to implement its green investment program for 2023-2027, with a budget of MAD 130 billion. The program focuses on strengthening local industrial and mining value chains while promoting innovation in Morocco’s industrial ecosystem. “We are investing MAD 130 billion globally over the next five years to sustainably increase our production capacity from 12 million tons of fertilizer to an incredible 20 million tons,” the company said. OCP’s key goals as part of the investment program include the production of one million tons of green ammonia, generating 5GW of clean energy, and reaching a volume of 20,000 tonnes of fluorine and 30,000 tonnes of intermediate products for Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries by 2027. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2024/12/366774/ocp-group-to-raise-mad-5-billion-in-bond-market

Rabat – The United States is determined to strengthen its foothold in Africa’s agribusiness sector by enhancing its cooperation with Morocco. According to the US embassy in Morocco, the US Department of Agriculture will host its first-ever Agribusiness Trade Mission to Morocco from December 2-5. The mission, the largest ever to Africa, aims to strengthen trade ties between the two countries. The event will serve as a platform convening a delegation of 26 American agribusinesses, 21 leaders of cooperatives, and 14 state agriculture departments as well as Moroccan and West African buyers. The event will enable these customers to explore the latest consumer food trends, access market demand and explore regional markets. Foreign Agricultural Service Administrator Daniel Whitley expressed in a statement the importance of this initiative, which offers a “crucial opportunity for U.S. agribusinesses to enter into Morocco’s dynamic market and leverage its strategic position for wider African access.” Whitley, who will lead the mission, says he is committed to facilitating these vital connections that will expand US agricultural exports. US ambassador to Morocco Puneet Talwar also discussed the importance of the mission in the statement, noting that it not only reflects the strong partnership between the two countries but also the cooperation, innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity within the agriculture industry. “By fostering trade and collaboration, we aim to advance food security, address shared challenges like climate change, and highlight the vital role of women in transforming agriculture globally,” he added. The event will also serve as a platform for business discussion. Representatives from US companies will take part in business-to-business meetings with potential buyers from Morocco and other West African countries like Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, and Senegal. Morocco and the US have been committed to boosting bilateral ties and cooperation at all levels, including trade. The two countries are connected through a Free Trade Agreement which came into effect in 2006. According to the US embassy, since the agreement came into effect, Moroccan agricultural exports to the US have almost tripled. Additionally, US agricultural exports to Morocco have also doubled. “The Kingdom was the second-largest U.S. agricultural market in Africa in 2023,” the US embassy said, noting that agriculture exchange between the two countries reached $900 million. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2024/12/366691/1st-trade-mission-us-seeks-further-access-to-africas-agribusiness-market-through-strong-ties-with-morocco
