US President Donald Trump plans to build a triumphal arch at one of the entrances to Washington to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the country's independence, which will be celebrated on July 4th of next year.

A model of the monument has been on his desk for several days, but Trump publicly revealed his intentions on Wednesday night during a gala dinner at the White House with donors funding the construction of a new ballroom at the residence.

The arch would be located near the Lincoln Memorial, at the opposite end of the Arlington Bridge, which serves as the gateway to Washington from Virginia.

"It's going to be really beautiful. I think it's going to be fantastic," Trump declared during the dinner.

The president, a real estate mogul, presented three models of varying sizes and said his favorite was the largest, crowned by a sculpture of the Roman goddess of Liberty.

Since returning to power last January, Trump has shown his intention to leave a lasting mark on Washington.

He has paved the White House Rose Garden, decorated the Oval Office with gold ornaments, and is building a grand ballroom in the presidential residence modeled after his private Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida.

In addition, he has deployed the National Guard to the capital to combat crime, against the wishes of local Democratic officials.

He also declared himself director of the Kennedy Center, the national theater for the performing arts. and ordered a review of the contents of the Smithsonian Institution, which manages the city's main museums, in order to align them with his political ideas.
