China's National Cultural Heritage Administration reported this Friday that more than 900 pieces of cultural relics were found and recovered from two ancient shipwrecks in the South Sea.

At a press conference held in Hainan province, in southern China, the recovery work carried out between 2023 and 2024 by research institutes was announced.

A local museum also participated in the recovery of a total of 890 pieces of relics found in the wrecked ship No. 1, including porcelain and ceramic objects, as well as copper coins.

From shipwreck No. 2, 38 ancient artifacts were recovered in addition to wood, turban snails, deer antlers, porcelain products and pottery. These shipwrecks from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) were discovered in October 2022 at a depth of about 1,500 meters.

For the deputy director of the Administration, Guan Qiang, “the two shipwrecks serve as important witnesses of trade and cultural exchanges along the ancient maritime Silk Road.”

For their part, local platforms recognize that the recovery work on these shipwrecks integrates China's deep-sea science and technology and underwater archaeology, which shows the country's performance in deep-sea archaeology.
