[Mobile Games] Sega becomes 'the bad guy' of his own video game: It is a dystopia in which they rule the world as tyrants while their great franchises try to save it

Sega has proven to be able to laugh at itself. The company launched a video game at the beginning of the month in which it proposed to players to solve Sonic's murder. It came as a fool, but it took Steam by storm and amassed over a million players. What we did not know at the time is that this was not even going to be the rarest game released by the company during the month of April. Just a few days ago, a release arrived with much more serious intentions in the video game market, but which starts from an even more surreal premise.

Sega wins the console war and takes over the world
The game in question is exclusive to mobile phones, it is called 404 GAME RE:SET and has Yoko Taro (Drakengard, Nier) as creative director. The strange thing, however, we already said that it is in its premise. The video game is set in a parallel universe in which Sega won the console war with Nintendo and ended up dominating the world. In this parallel dimension, they are the rulers of a dystopia. They not only have power in entertainment, but also in construction or the military. In fact, in one of the cinematics they bomb a city without remorse.

The word surreal almost falls short for us, because we never imagine a company putting itself in this situation. However, it also has a trick. The heroes who have to save the world are nothing more than the personified representations of the great licenses of the company. Virtua Racing, Fantasy Zone or House of the Dead become anime girls to fight corruption and put an end to this dystopia. Even so, it is surprising that the brand is positioned as an antagonist in a dystopia of these characteristics.

As for the gameplay, the truth is that it is a much less groundbreaking section. The characters, which have different rarities and abilities, fire automatically as we move sideways dodging projectiles 'bullet hell' style. In addition, each of the heroines, which are obtained through micropayments based on random rewards, have a unique attack that deals more damage and grants certain buffs. Even so, this section is perhaps the least important. Unless we access the iOS or Android 'store' in Japan, we will not be able to play it.

 

 

The truth is that the game has become a curious phenomenon. There is some interest in knowing what will happen if one day Sonic appears in this title, like the rest of the characters, turned into an anime girl. Despite everything, the title seems to be working relatively well. Before its premiere on April 17, it had 150,000 registered players, being exclusive to Japan.
