Male white-lined bats seduce females with a fragrance based on an explosive cocktail of urine, saliva and secretions. A perfume that is not only used for courtship, but also to mark the territory.

Murciélago de líneas blancas

White-lined bats inhabit tropical forests and establish their roosts in caves and cavities found in buildings and trees, like this specimen, photographed in Manaus, Brazil.

White-lined bats (Saccopteryx bilineata) are common in the jungles of Central and South America. These insectivorous bats have two light stripes that run more or less zigzag along the back, hence the name bilineata. Regarding the genus, the name Saccopteryx refers to its wing sacs: on each of the wings, on the upper part of the forearm (in the so-called propagation, which is the elastic membrane that goes from the shoulder to the first finger), the males have a small sac – they too, but much less developed – where they make a fragrance that the females find most exciting. Are you interested in the formula? Take note of the ingredients: a few drops of urine and a few drops of saliva, combined with genital and gular gland secretions, and you're set to succeed.

With their well-laden sacks, the males approach the females of the harem, who, huddled together on the walls of different types of cavities, watch attentively as they approach in low flight, during which they hover, flap their wings and spread their perfume before the female concurrence until one, drunk with love, is willing to mate. Although the breeding season is limited to a few weeks between November and December, the males conscientiously prepare this suggestive aromatic mixture every day. And it is that, according to the expert in bats Christian Voigt, a researcher in the department of Evolutionary Ecology of the Leibniz Institute for Research for Zoos and Wildlife, in Germany, "olfactory displays are not only associated with courtship, but also encode the individuality and serve to mark the territory. A total multi-effect perfume.
