Giving a name to a car model is not an easy thing. Although unfortunate examples abound in history, we also have many cases where a good success added to a good product generates vehicles that become legendary. And if we talk about legendary, Jeep has some models that have been creating their own history for years.

Jeep in particular is a brand that puts a lot of emphasis on its history. That is why the company's marketing teams work hard to reflect it in each product that leaves the factory and that is why they explain what they wanted to convey with each name.

wrangler

Wrangler means cowboy and, according to the brand, conveys the idea of hard work in environments that can be hostile. The company says the concept fits perfectly with the car's proposition, which is built to tackle rough terrain and equipped with a host of off-road features. The Wrangler is the successor to the classic CJ and was added to the Jeep lineup after 1987, when Chrysler bought the brand.

Renegade
Jeep first used this name in the 1970s to name a sportier-style version of the CJ-5 and later in the early 1990s on a variant specific to the first-generation Wrangler and then also used. used to name a concept that was shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. Renegade can be literally translated as renegade, but Jeep's intention is to associate it with the concept of rebellion, as one that escapes from the ordinary and breaks standards.

gladiator
Jeep used this legendary name on trucks from the 1960s and 1980s, now it's used again to name the Wrangler-derived pickup. In Spanish it means gladiator, like those fighters who gave their lives in the arenas, and the intention was to show strength and courage.

compass
In Spanish it means compass or compass, a well-known instrument used for navigation and orientation. According to Jeep, the concept behind the name is to convey the idea that the owner can easily go wherever he wants. In addition, it awakens fundamental characteristics of the category such as fearlessness, lifestyle and off-road abilities.

commander
Commander means "commander" in Spanish and conveys the idea of leadership, authority and leadership. It was first used in an SUV introduced in 2006. Like the current Commander, it also offered seating for seven passengers.

Cherokee
Cherokee comes from the name of a people native to North America characterized by its fierceness and courage and served Jeep to name one of its most important and long-lived products. Later, in 1992, the largest and most luxurious variant was born, which simply added the “Grand” (great) to the nomenclature.

And what does Jeep mean?
Here's a prize for those who read the entire note. Perhaps they did not know that the origin of this name has several versions.

The main version is that during World War II, the off-road vehicle prototype had the initials GP, (for General Purpose or general purposes) in English, GP is pronounced as "yip" and that is where the origin of the name seems to come from.

But there is another theory, perhaps more colorful but just as plausible, that has to do with Popeye the Sailor. In that cartoon there was a cat-like character named Eugene The Jeep, who was characterized by his ability to go anywhere and do anything. Eugente the only thing he could say was "jeep" and that is where the name could also have been taken from.

Did you know the origins of these names?
