Around the last weeks of December, the streets of the city are filled with explosions and detonations from pyrotechnics. Camaretas, firecrackers and flares are some of the most po[CENSORED]r among children, youth and adults who have fun with this practice on the days before New Year's Eve.

Despite the fact that for years fireworks have been considered a tradition to say goodbye to the year, pet owners are increasingly concerned about their animals, who are physically and psychologically hurt by detonations.

Although it is true that not all animals are affected to the same extent, many suffer from stress, anxiety and fear, even running away from their homes or becoming aggressive towards humans and other animals.

According to veterinarian Glenda Sánchez, owners should make sure their pets have an identifying collar, in case they run away in fear.

“Four years ago, a lost cat arrived at my house, all beaten up, with signs of having been burned and dragged. I thought I would have to euthanize it, ”recalls the doctor, who was finally able to save the cat's life and is now part of her family.

On New Year's Eve, she usually gives her animals valerian dissolved in water, if she notices anxiety. In addition, she plays soft background music to reduce the noise.

On those dates, Sánchez does not usually go out or meet, to take care of her animals. "They know I'm at home and that gives them security," says the veterinarian.

More tips to take care of your pets from fireworks stress

  • Do not leave animals alone on New Year's Eve: The night of the burning of the old years and the explosions, they are more prone to having anxiety attacks and running away if they are alone.
  • Keep them entertained: Whether it's soft music or games, pets can be entertained to take their mind off outside noise.
  • Adapt a room for pets: Preferably it is dark, with the door and windows closed to eliminate visual stimulation.
  • Exercise them beforehand: It can help to calm them when night falls, if the animals are sleepy from the exercise they did during the day.
  • Take them to the vet: If pets express a lot of anxiety before or after New Year's Eve, it is recommended to consult with the vet to give them the best treatment and care.
