His influences include reggae, pop, rock, folk, jazz, and hip hop. He studied at Longwood University for a short time, then had a short stint at the American Dramatic Academy (to study Musical Theater) in New York, moving to San Diego. His first musical project was "A Jason Mraz Demonstration", in 1999, independently recorded and containing 8 tracks of his own authorship. After this would come four more EPs. In 2002, Mraz was signed to Elektra Records, returning to Virginia to work with producer John Alagía on his debut album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, which would go platinum in July 2004 and reach #2 on the Billboard's Chart. His first single, "The Remedy (I Wo n't Worry)", was co-written by the music production team The Matrix (who have written songs from Avril Lavigne to Korn to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera). Also in 2004, the singer released a CD/DVD of the concert recorded a year earlier, in Milwaukee, in the US state of Wisconsin. The album, titled "Tonight, not again: Jason Mraz live at the Eagles Ballroom", was among the top 50 albums on the Billboard 200. In June and July 2005, Mraz opened for all of Alanis Morissette's shows during her Jagged Little Pill Acoustic tour. In 2005 he released his 2nd album of original songs, Mr. A-Z by Atlantic Records, which would chart at #55 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. In December, the album would also receive a Grammy Award nomination for Best Non-Classical Projected Album, while its producer was nominated for Producer of the Year. Mraz began his tour for the album “Mr. A-Z” on September 12 at the San Diego Music Awards. This same tour would have the collaboration of several artists such as Bushwalla and Tristan Prettyman, with whom Mraz had co-written the duet "Shy That Way" in 2002 and "All I Want for Christmas Is You". Mraz and Prettyman walked, ending their relationship in 2006. In November 2005, Mraz opened for some of the Rolling Stones' concerts on their world tour. Also in 2005, Mraz was one of several singers (including artists such as: Tristan Prettyman, Joss Stone, Keith Urban, Alanis Morissette and Michelle Williams) to feature in the Gap ad titled “Favorites.” In December 2005, Mraz launches the first part of his podcast In May 2006, Mraz toured the US performing mainly at music festivals across the US and some shows in Ireland and the UK. In December 2006, Selections for Friends was released, an album of live performances available only on the internet, recorded during the Songs for Friends tour. Jason Mraz in 2007 started developing his new single "The Beauty in Ugly", - a remake of his old single "Plain Jane" which he rewrote for the show Ugly Betty (Ugly Betty in the original version). In 2007, American Idol contestant Chris Richardson sings "Geek in the Pink", thus gaining the knowledge and interest of the Media and increasing the number of downloads on iTunes.
