He made his debut in 1999 with Incognegro, an album released independently by his label, Disturbing tha Peace. Then, with the creation of Def Jam South, a subsidiary of Def Jam, Ludacris is hired and becomes its main face. His second album, Back for the First Time, came out in 2000 and marks Ludacris' Def Jam South debut. The following year, the singer's second album was released by the label, entitled Word of Mouf. In 2003, he released Chicken-n-Beer and, in 2004, The Red Light District, from which the singles "Get Back" and "Number One Spot" were taken.
