In the section dedicated to companion animals of the new animal law, 10 general obligations are included for the owners or persons responsible for these pets.

In Spain, dogs, cats and birds are on the podium of the most frequent pets. Unquestionably, the number one of all is the dog, which accounts for more than 80% of all animals in Spain. For those who have a pet, now they must know their new rights and duties.

Law 17/2021, of December 15, entered into force on January 5, twenty days after its publication in the Official State Gazette, and modifies the Civil Code to adapt it to the true nature of animals and relationships of coexistence that is strengthened between them and human beings.

The 10 obligations of the new Animal Protection Law
1. First of all, pets must be integrated into the family nucleus, where they must be properly groomed and clean.

2. In the event that the animal cannot live in the family nucleus due to size or characteristics, these pets must live in accommodation that is adequate in size for their dimensions. In addition, it must be a place that protects them from the weather, both from the cold and the rain, as well as from the heat. They also cannot be isolated from other animals or people.

3. In the case of pets that, due to their characteristics and species, live permanently in cages, aquariums, terrariums and the like, they must have adequate spaces in size, naturalization and environmental enrichment for their possession.

4. It is necessary to adopt the necessary measures to prevent the uncontrolled reproduction of pets. In case they may have uncontrolled contact with other animals, they must be sterilized. In the same way, if two animals of the same species and of different sexes live together, at least one of the two must be sterilized. The exception would be for those registered in the National Registry of Breeders.

5. It is completely forbidden to leave them at any time inside closed vehicles, exposed to weather conditions that could put their lives in danger.

9. The owners are responsible for the dogs passing the behavior validations established by regulation.

10. If the owners separate, having the same rights as people, a judge will decide on their custody.
