Studying veterinary is a very personal decision, which is marked by a high rate of involvement and vocation. Although it is true that these studies offer a large number of professional opportunities, the clinic, both small and large animals, is one of the facets most demanded by many recent graduates. However, other of the many outlets offered by these studies go through the field of research or food quality control. On this topic, as well as their perception of the profession in all its aspects, or the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the collective, we have had the opportunity to interview several veterinarians who finished their studies a long time ago and currently perform functions related to said profession. Title. We wanted to know if the perception of the profession has been changing over the years, or if, on the contrary, reality has adjusted to expectations.

 

Soraya Haro, quality manager of a food company based in Toledo, indicates that “from the beginning it was always clear to me that I wanted to dedicate myself to food quality and safety, and my approach has not changed over the years. Although, at times I have considered redirecting myself to other sectors that are not food”. The differences that exist between the expectations at the end of the degree and the reality that many professionals have encountered, such as poor working conditions, or low pay, makes some veterinarians consider a change of scenery for the future. For example, Guillermo García assures that he does not see himself retiring as a clinical veterinarian for large children, "it is a hard job to which are added the bad hours, the shifts, the working days that you never know when they will end, etc."
