On this occasion, Archbishop Athanasius, Bishop of Limassol said: "We have blessed the animals, all the pets that were near us because we need their company. And although they are not human, the Church also blesses the animals because they are also created by God." Religiously, October 4 marks the day of remembrance of the Catholic saint Francis of Assisi, who preached kindness to animals. The decision to celebrate this holiday was made at the International Conference of the Nature Conservation Movement, which was held in Florence, Italy in 1931. World Animal Day is a global event uniting the animal protection movement, led and sponsored by the UK-based animal welfare charity Naturewatch, since 2003. The general principles for the conservation of animals from extinction were set by the International Society for Animal Rights during the International Meeting on Animal Rights held in London on September 21-23, 1977, and the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights was promulgated in Paris on October 15, 1978 in Headquarters of UNESCO, the final text was submitted by the International Society for Animal Rights in 1989 to the Director-General of UNESCO and the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights was promulgated in 1990.
