The United States accused China and Russia on Friday of spreading disinformation on social networks about the side effects and efficacy of vaccines created in the West to promote their own serums against covid-19.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki made that accusation at a news conference and said she was relying on data compiled by the State Department.

"We have discovered that Russia and China have promoted their own vaccines through messages that undermine the origin of Western vaccines to help develop their programs," Psaki said.

Specifically, according to the spokesperson, the misinformation of Russia and China is directed against the two vaccines with preparations based on mRNA that have been approved in the United States: that of Pfizer and that of Moderna.

"That kind of information magnifies the potential side effects associated with Western vaccines," she said.

The White House believes that misinformation about vaccines, masks and social distancing measures is undermining the authorities' efforts to deal with the pandemic and putting lives at risk.

For this reason, on Thursday, the highest US health authority, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, warned of the "urgent threat" posed by misinformation about covid-19, at a time when cases are increasing and vaccination rates have stagnated.

Murthy's office made his recommendations in a 22-page public health notice. Such reports are usually reserved for specific health issues, but the scope and scale of the misinformation is so great that the Joe Biden government decided to use that resource.

Psaki today also again asked Facebook and other tech giants to change their algorithms to prevent the spread of false data.

Covid-19 cases rose 11% last week and recorded greater increases in those areas of the country where vaccination does not exceed 40%, according to the government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The median immunization rate among those over the age of 18 is 59.2%, while 67.9% have already received a dose, according to CDC data.
