Vegan, what does it mean?
Being vegan refers to those people who eliminate any food of animal origin from their diet. It even has to do with what they wear, their life is free of any product that comes from any animal species.

The reasons for being vegan or adopting veganism vary depending on the people but some of these have to do with the protection of animal rights, since they are against killing or the way in which these species are raised to simply be part of our daily diet.

Joaquin Phoenix is one of the Hollywood stars who grew up being vegan and who, until his adult life, remains under this diet, both diet and habits.

Many people do not eat meat for health reasons, eating meat (beef, chicken, lamb or pork) may be harmful and cause chronic diseases of the cardiovascular system such as high cholesterol.

Also religion can be a strong issue to become vegan. Remember that those who practice Hinduism are strictly forbidden to eat animals because they believe in reincarnation and, even, cattle are species that they consider sacred.

What is vegan?
Being vegan not only has to do with food but has become a lifestyle. A very simple example is vegans who do not buy any products made from leather.

Hence the questions, what is vegan? Or what products are vegan? Because even in supermarkets and self-service stores there are already sections dedicated exclusively to veganism.

British designer Stella McCartney's commitment to veganism is such that it has led to her work. In 2019 he presented the first 100% vegan Stan Smith sneakers, that is, made with a fully synthetic imitation cowhide.

Vegan products are those that in their process and ingredients or materials are totally free of raw materials of animal origin and in which tests were not carried out on animals so that there are, for example, cosmetics.

Silk, wool and animal fur are non-vegan materials.

Vegan food
Vegan food is one that is made with ingredients of plant origin such as fruits, vegetables and seeds. In a vegan recipe you will never find any product of animal origin, be it meat or derivatives of animal origin such as milk, cheese or other types of dairy products.

One of the reasons people prepare vegan food is to eat a low-fat diet, since animal products are rich in saturated fatty acids.

Difference between vegan and vegetarian
Being vegan and vegetarian is not the same and the main difference is very clear: vegans do not consume any food of animal origin, while vegetarians only refer to not eating beef, pork, chicken and fish, among others.

While most vegetarians do consume eggs and milk, vegans do not include any type of dairy, eggs and honey in their diet.

World Vegan Day
November 1 was established as World Vegan Day. This began in 1994 when Louise Wallis, president of the Vegan Society of the United Kingdom, established this date to raise awareness in the world about the benefits of being vegan.
