Mindsphere. Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 The laser from Măgurele, Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP), was included by the Government on the list of installations and special objectives of national interest, financed from the funds of the Ministry of Education and Research, news.ro announces. "Currently, the list of installations and special objectives of national interest, financed by the Ministry of Education and Research, from the state budget, chapter 'Fundamental research and research-development', includes a number of 30 positions, selected following the evaluation based on methodology and criteria established by order of the Minister, to which will be added, starting today, May 27, 2020, Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP), administered by the National Research-Development Institute for Nuclear Physics and Engineering 'Horia Hulubei '(IFIN-HH) Bucharest, an institute coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Research ", the ministry announced in a communiqué. Installations and special objectives of national interest are research and development structures, without legal personality, operating within a research and development unit with legal personality, providing scientific and technological support for one or more areas of the National Research Strategy, Development, Innovation, but also logistical support for international cooperation. "Considering the evaluation criteria applied, it was found that Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) has reached a level of technical and functional maturity, the laser being in the designed parameters, has a major supporting role for the research activity- development in strategic fields, ensuring, at the same time, the scientific, technical and logistical support for international cooperations, including in various research infrastructure programs to which Romania is a party ", the ministry states. At this time, Romania has the most advanced research infrastructure in the world in the field of high power lasers. Within it, were received and put into operation: special buildings and geothermal system that ensure the environmental conditions necessary for the operation of scientific equipment, high power laser system with two arms of 10 PW, two arms of 1 PW, two arms of 100 TW, the target laboratory for laser interaction with matter, the optical laboratory, as well as all the experimental assemblies provided by the technical projects of the experiments, approved by the International Scientific Committee of ELI-NP. "In addition to confirming the functionality and delivering the parameters designed for the High Power Laser System, the first experiments with it were performed on the lower power arms, which is a world premiere. It is absolutely necessary to support the operation of this system to start the experiments planned in this period, considering that by the end of 2020, the interaction cameras necessary for the operation of the laser at maximum power will be installed ", the Ministry of Education and Research also shows. Access to the use of this infrastructure is provided not only to researchers in public research and development units, but also to researchers and users in private research and development units and economic agents.
