US President Donald Trump threatened Friday with a military intervention in Venezuela, a surprise escalation in Washington's response to the nation.

Trump told reporters gathered at his New Jersey golf course that he was not going to "rule out" a military option.

"It's certainly something we could consider," he added.

Trump has criticized Maduro's recent policy measures, which he described as "dictator."

The Trump government has issued a series of sanctions against Maduro and against more than twenty officials and former Venezuelan officials.

"People are suffering and dying. We have many options in Venezuela, including a possible military option if necessary, "Trump told reporters.

Trump made the remarks at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, after meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson; National security adviser H. R. McMaster; And US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley.

Last Thursday, President Nicolas Maduro extended his hand to his US counterpart and reiterated his desire to maintain "normal relations" between the two nations.
