A total of 7,199 people have died since the beginning of the year in their attempt to reach another country, a record figure, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Friday.
That number means an average of 20 deaths per day, so the total death toll would increase between 200 and 300 for the remainder of the year, IOM said in a statement.

It is possible that many deaths go unnoticed and are not registered by governments or humanitarian actors, said the Organization, which reported 5,740 deaths in 2015.

In all migratory routes, the number of deaths increased, and for the last two years, passages linking North Africa, the Middle East and Europe accounted for 60 per cent of deaths worldwide.

Thus, the most dangerous maritime route was the Mediterranean, where four thousand 812 people lost their lives, about 1,100 more than at the same stage of the previous year.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said that 2016 will be the deadliest year for migrants in that sea.
