-DarkJesús- Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 MOSCOW Russian Bombers type SU-34 took off Wednesday for the second day of the airbase of Hamadan in western Iran, to attack rebel positions in Syria, said the Russian Defense Ministry from Moscow. According to the ministry, the planes attacked positions of the self-styled Islamic State terrorist militia (EIIL, ISIS or Daesh) in the Syrian region of Deir al-Zour. The attacks have killed more than 150 jihadist fighters, DPA said. The operations were authorized by the Supreme National Security Council based on an agreement with Russia, Syria and Iraq, confirmed the head of the security committee of the Iranian parliament, Alaeddin Borouyerdi, was quoted by the IRNA state agency. The MP explained that the planes were using Nojeh base in the western province of Hamadan, to refuel. Hamadan is much closer to the positions of ISIS Khmeimim the base on the northern coast of Syria, which Russia had previously used. "The issue should be considered as a necessary and strategic cooperation in the fight against terrorism," said former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, foreign policy adviser for nearly 20 years the supreme leader of Iran is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei . Due to the lingering global and regional threat of ISIS, this new partnership should not be surprising, Velayati said. Russia and Iran must act to prevent further destruction and casualties in Syria, he added. Earlier today, the Iranian Parliament, Ali Larijani, had denied that Russia had used an airbase on Tuesday to launch attacks against targets in Syria. The Kremlin said the use of the airbase not violate a UN resolution prohibiting the delivery of fighter jets to Iran. "There has been no supply, sale or transfer of fighter aircraft to Iran," he said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted by the state news agency TASS. The spokesman for the US State Department, Mark Toner, had said on Tuesday that Russia is probably in violation of resolution 2231 of the United Nations Security Council to use Iranian territory to launch airstrikes in Syria. Resolution 2231 prohibits the delivery, sale or transfer of fighter jets to Iran, unless the Security Council had given its approval in advance. Russia and Iran are historic allies of Syrian President Bashar al Assad. While Russia and the United States supports opposing groups in Syria, both sides agree the need to eliminate those classified as terrorists by the United Nations as the ISIS groups. On Tuesday, several Russian bombers took off for the first time Nojeh airbase to launch attacks on rebel positions in Syria. According to the state news agency TASS, it was the first time that Russian warplanes used an Iranian air base for military action in the neighboring country. Quote
