Windows 10 could have access to free upgrades only during the first 2-4 years after launch

Intentionally or not, Microsoft officials have so far been reluctant to specify how long Windows 10 users will have access to free upgrades, saying only that the operating system will be kept up to date over the life of the device supported, no additional cost. But the company does not explain the exact meaning of the term lifetime of the device supported leaving room for interpretation, as it would refer to the warranty of the device or just the time until the next launch Windows versions.

 

The mystery seems to be explained by a well hidden PowerPoint presentation on the website of Microsoft, published in the June 26 without any official statement on information contained herein.

 

 

Thus, it appears that the presentation time duration in which software upgrades are provided is derived from the duration of the life of the device, which can vary between 2 and 4 years. Although it seems short-mentioned range fits renewal cycle of Windows versions, so that free upgrades period may be extended by installing a new version of the operating system. For example, Windows Phone 8.1 system, offered as a free upgrade to Windows Phone 8, automatically extended life cycle of devices on which it was installed. Similarly, devices with Windows 10 update to a new version of the operating system could extend the length of time that is accessible free upgrades, bringing new features or improve existing ones.

It must be said that the life estimated at 2-4 years is only applicable to ordinary consumers, business customers will be part of service for a longer period of time.
