The figure and actions of Mikis Theodorakis were vital to rescue and preserve the tradition, history and culture of Greece.

It was that, between 2012 and 2015, a decade ago, a crisis and a revolt that shook the world. They were not the first, but there was a lot of impact. The Greeks were rising up against the neoliberal packages, the so-called emergency bailouts granted by the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), demanding that governments bring the people to their knees.

For a few years the political and economic situation in Greece was in the shadow of the planet, just as it had been during the Second World War against Italian fascism and German Nazism, and then the English occupation and the so-called Coup. the Colonels. Nothing there was free.

With the demonstrations in Hellenic territory we all in some way turned our gaze towards its history, its struggles, its contributions in all the disciplines of science, and its legendary manifestations of art, its culture in theater, dance, philosophy and music.

In a clear and universal example of what militancy for Justice and Peace is, together with the task of rescuing and maintaining the tradition, history and culture of his country, the figure and actions of Mikis Theodorakis were very important , it was vital. He wasn't the only one, but he was the most notable.

From Mikis Theodorakis are these lines, which together with Manolis Glezos he released as an open letter: “Fighting against the class of wealth, the citizens of Athens pointed the way for the Constitution of Pericles and the political philosophy of Protagoras, who said : 'Man is far above all money.' Today, the rich are trying to take revenge on the human mentality: 'The markets are far above all men' is the motto that our political leaders gladly embrace, allied to the demon money as new Fausts. Their media is not only directed against Greeks, but also against Greek heritage and ancient Greek civilization. This option shows the deep and hidden objectives of the ideology and values of financial capital, promoter of a capitalism of destruction. The attempt by the German media to humiliate symbols, such as the Acropolis or the Venus de Milo, is nothing more than an expression of the deep contempt of the bankers who control the media, not so much against the Greeks, but above all against the ideas of freedom and democracy that were born in this country.”

Mikis Theodorakis
He was born on July 29, 1925 in Chios, Greece and died in Athens on September 2, 2021.

This creator massively known for the music of the film “Zorba, the Greek” is one of the best examples of militancy with and for art. Theodorakis has been, without a doubt, one of the greatest composers of contemporary Greece. In addition to music and art, he was always a communist militant and a great fighter against fascism. The mark of Greece was in all of his work and in all his steps in academics, in po[CENSORED]r, in cinema, in dance production, in short, in his legacy of land and seas, and in his life. .

It is remembered that in protest against the English, also invaders of his land, after a veritable massacre of protesters, Theodorakis soaked the Greek flag with the blood of the dead and wounded and advanced with it towards the oppressors. This is how they regained the spaces that they tried to take away from them.

He was only 19 years old and, when detained, he experienced imprisonment and terrible torture. The same ones that he would suffer in 1967 with the so-called Coup of the Colonels (far right). International pressure managed to get him out of prison and into exile in France, and there he developed a very productive stage for his musical creation and a great rapprochement with the Hispanic and Latin American world.
