[Politics] Karol Cariola returns to the fray to preside over the Chamber of Deputies

Deputy Karol Cariola smiles a knowing smile, but neither confirms nor rules out whether she is available for her revenge: becoming the first communist cadre to preside over the Chamber of Deputies in 2024.

“It is not official,” says a member of the Communist Party (PC) bench. However, in the ruling party the first negotiations have already begun so that the representative for district 9, and the first electoral majority in the 2021 parliamentary elections, is the PC parliamentarian who presides over the Chamber table from next March.

In the ruling party they explain with some optimism that with the support – and the votes – of the benches of deputies of the Democratic Socialism, Apruebo Dignidad, the DC, plus some independents, votes from the PDG and Amarillos, the necessary majority would be achieved for “ be headed by a deputy from the PC”, although they do not mention the name of Karol Cariola.

“There is a commitment and the Christian Democracy bench is going to fulfill and honor the commitment that we have assumed together with other political forces of the ruling party, of Democrats, of the PDG, in relation to the administrative agreement of the Chamber. And in that sense, when appropriate, as established by the Chamber itself, we will vote for a member of the Communist Party to preside over the Chamber. There is no doubt about that and I think that what happened on Tuesday in relation to the Constitutional Court has been tremendously valuable, that beyond the tensions of a minute, it was possible to ratify.

Paradoxically, the phalanx was mainly responsible for the two failed attempts by the PC to preside over the party. In November 2022, the Christian Democracy removed the floor from Deputy Cariola, due to the support of some communist legislators for the complaint against the former director of the INDH, Sergio Micco (ex-DC), presented by the Chilean Human Rights Commission for on 18-O.

In 2023, when it was 50 years since the coup d'état, the DC was also not willing to support a communist but instead encouraged one of its militants, the current president of the Chamber, Ricardo Cifuentes, as a letter, but giving a vice presidency to the deputy Carmen Hertz (PC).

This year the panorama is different. And this has been shown in the municipal negotiations meetings, where the Christian Democrats and the Communist Party coincide. Added to this is the communist support that Precht received. Furthermore, Micco is now a Yellow team and the lawsuit is concluded.
